Assignments for Combination Classes

Combination classes are a single course in our SIS, as a result the import enrolls all students in a single section. We can't break up that section since it would sever the connection with our SIS. We don't want to use groups as they are not really meant for this purpose, and are not easily managed for content. Anyone know of a way a teacher could differentiate assignments, short of assigning to students individually? I was also thinking of essentially creating extra sections and adding the students by grade, however with our current configuration that would have to be done and managed by an admin. I'm hoping to find something that would work on a larger scale.
