Changing student groups after a group assignment is collected

I use student groups for grading group assignments but I was unsure about something. If I have students in a group for an assignment and the assignment is turned in (not graded yet), could I change the groups for students to work in for another assignment? The question stems from the practice of avoiding a large amount of different groups. I'd rathersrather havethave one group that represents their table group that changes every once in a while. However, I'm afraid that changing the students around the table groups after an assignment will confuse Canvas as to which students were originally in the group for each particular assignment.
