Embedding an Image into a Discussion in less steps

I'm trying to create on-going visual files for my kids to keep an Art portfolio in Canvas. I've figured out how to create a private discussion for each student. And how to embed an Image (see video below) so they can see the image and not just a file name.  But now I need an easier way for students to upload an image that will allow them to do this in less steps. There has to be an easier way I'm working with 2-4th graders.

I get so excited when I meet another art teacher in the Canvas Community!!

I teach art at the high school level, and each student has iPads. I have done portfolios and discussions a couple of different ways while including student artwork, and I know we can find a solution together.

One question though: Are your students able to use the Canvas Student app on the iPad? The experience is much simpler, and it would give us a few more opportunities to explore.

My students all have i-pads and they can access the student app. But I was told by the tech person in our district not to use the app, because it doesn't give students full access. So we just link to the website on their i-pad home page.

I'm surprised by that advice! I'm curious as to why. I know there are features that aren't available (peer reviews, selecting a group, what-if scores...), but that shouldn't be enough to prevent it from being adopted. The students I work with prefer the app over the browser when they work with their iPads! I bet your little artists would as well.

I just tried it through the app and it works really well and easy. I'm checking with my district tech person again to see why it was recommended we not use the app. But you may have just solved my problem, so Thank you!

Wonderful! The app has a wonderful, simplified experience for embedding photos into a discussion.
