We've been on Canvas for almost three years now and we haven't deleted anything. We've almost reached our quota and so we must decide to purchase more space or start deleting. I'm just curious how other institutions are handling this. When we had Blackboard, we only kept courses around for 2 years because we were self-hosted and didn't want to pay for the additional storage. Now that we are on Canvas, we intended to keep courses around longer - especially since we allow students to access the concluded courses.
We've inquired w/Instructure about an archiving solution. I think it's something they have discussed but have not necessarily made a priority.
What's your school doing?
aks_adm, because of accreditation purposes we have to have access to 10 years worth of all of our courses. We've been using Canvas since 2012-2013 and are still a ways off from using up our data so I have to admit I'm surprised that your Institution is already getting close. Yet, because we do need to keep our courses around for quite a while I'm interested to hear what other Institutions are doing and what options Canvas might offer for archiving. Because this isn't a right/wrong answer type of question I'm going to flip this over to a Discussion so that way we can continue the discussion!
Thanks for changing this to a discussion! I'm thinking our course quota must be much larger than most other institutions allow. We have our course quota set to 1GB. For the most part, instructors don't even get close to 1GB though. We have box (w/unlimited storage) and so we encourage faculty to store files in box and link to them in Canvas.
Wow... yes, we've stuck with the original 500MB and rarely (if ever) provide additional space. If someone gets close we work with them to figure out what they're doing and then normally end up recommending they use YouTube for video and Google Doc's for large files/handouts.
We've been with Canvas since fall 2013, and just had to purchase additional storage because we were close to our institutional limit. Although Canvas does provide an easy way to delete old courses in bulk, there is no easy way to archive and save a copy in bulk.
I did bring up the idea of a bulk archive in a previous thread (which I could not find) and the Canvas response was that we are aware but in no rush. At some point I hope this becomes reality...
