I would like to make a self-paced mini-course but where students can't jump around to other pages in the module and don't directly see all the module pages as it could be confusing. I'd like to have a button that says "get started" at the bottom that goes to the first page of the module and then use the "next" button to go to the next page.
This works fine on browsers but in the app there is no "next" button when I link to the first page. It treats it as only a page. If I go to "modules" and go from there, there is a little arrow at the bottom (wish it said "next" as I have text that says "click 'next'" but I digress).
I hope there's a way I can link to the first page or at least the first page of the module for those using mobile devices.
You're correct. When "jumping" to a page as a link, the mobile devices sees it as only a page.
My students all have iPad, and when I design with buttons from my home page, I direct them to the top of a module so the forward/backwards buttons are always available. If there is a distinct series that needs to be completed, I add module requirements. In Canvas Student, students also see little green indicators that they've completed/viewed the item. It helps a lot as they monitor their progress.
How do I add requirements to a module?
How do I view Modules in the Student app on my iOS device?
While it is not a solution that will get you the parallel experience as a browser, I hope it's helpful!
Yes--I have required module sequencing as well. I could add buttons to the bottom that also link to the correct next page to help out.
I am a little worried because if they do go to the module and try to click on a page out of sequence, it will have a prompt that they can't do it yet. However, my students have limited English. Do you know if that message that pops up will appear in their language if they are using Canvas in their first language?
With pages as part of a Module sequence, the titles are light gray and actually can't be tapped/opened.
With assignments, there's a "warning" that appears near the top to inform students that the activity is not available at that time.

Most Canvas native prompts support localization based on the language that they select by going to their Account, Settings, and then Edit. That means that the students will see the prompts in their language of choice.
Content that you add will appear in the language in which you wrote it and will not get translated.
