Middleware API requests to Canvas appear as page views for users

We've noticed that when viewing a viewing a student's page views on
https://lms.ecornell.com/accounts/{accountid}/users/{userid}
we're often seeing API calls originating from our middleware (our middleware's IP) as if they are page views.
I don't believe that this used to be the case. Why are these appearing as student views?
