I am trying to give a one-time participation grade to my students at the end of the course. I can't figure out how to do this-- if i create an Assignment it asks the student to submit something. I'm sure it's an easy task-- can anyone help? Thanks
Solved! Go to Solution.
When you add this assignment, select submission type: no submission, and type a brief note in instructions that indicates what you will be grading and when the score will be entered.
Alternatively you can turn on the attendance tab, and let it automatically create a roll call assignment based on your daily attendance record. You can use present/late/absent as categories of participation, and then the grade will update the average every time you "take attendance" to measure participation.

This sounds interesting, but I am confused on how to set this up. Can you give me step-by-step instructions?
Hi Julie,
The attendance feature in canvas can be turned on by dragging the attendance tab into the navigation list in course settings. (Make sure you click save!) The class list will automatically display and you can click next to each student's name to mark them present, late, or absent. "Late" is a portion of that day's attendance calibrated by you, but it is the same for every day. The first time you use it in a course, it automatically adds the roll call assignment to your gradebook. It will show up in the top listed assignment group, if you use assignment groups. Then you can drag it into the group you need it in.
