The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Is there an "undo" option in Canvas gradebook? I accidentally entered a grade from a new assignment for a student into a previously graded assignment column and could not retrieve the grade for the previous assignment.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @mcox51 Welcome to the Canvas Community. You will be relieved to hear that although there is no "undo" option there is a way to view all previous marks that were in the gradebook. You can find out more here: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13024-415295585 It is an incredibly useful tool and has come to the rescue of many a faculty member! Bear in mind that lesson shows the legacy/existing gradebook and not the New Gradebook (if you're using it), but the same function exists in the New Gradebook, as well.
I hope this helps, Melissa!

The link does not work. Is this information available anywhere else? Thank you.
Hi there, @mnalim ...
The link that Ken had provided a few years back was when the Canvas Community website was using another platform. In Summer of 2020, Instructure moved to a new platform for the Community (what we are using now), so that meant that some links...like the one you noted...aren't re-directing. Thanks to the WaybackMachine website (which allows people to see what websites looked like in the past), I was able to find the link I *think* Ken was pointing to. The Guide he referenced is:
How do I view the history of all grading changes in the Gradebook?
I hope this will be of some help to you. Let Community members know if you have any other questions about this...thanks!
The Canvas gradebook needs to have an undo command, combined with a save command. Without them, entering scores directly into the gradebook is risky.
I saw an answer posted to this question that requires learning more than I want to about Canvas. Hard pass.
My way around this problem is to do most data entry into an Excel spreadsheet, then upload the .csv file to the Canvas gradebook. Excel is a quality application, and of course it has Undo and Save commands.
