Rich Content Editor- does it make students their own copy of linked google doc?

I upload everything for a students weekly homework in one assignments tab. Notes, a powerpoint, and questions to go with the notes (this is what I want them to fill in and submit on canvas). 

I have uploaded them all using links with Rich content editor and give instructions. 

When the students click on the links, is it making them their own copy? If so, are they then able to submit the questions with a google cloud assignment if I put that as the submission external tool type and it open in a new tab so they can still see the notes in another tab to answer the questions?

Hi Kate,

If you link to a Google Document through the Rich Content Editor it probably is not creating a copy for each student when they click on it.  They might have an option when viewing to "Save a copy in my drive", but by default that is not the case.

If they do happen to "save a copy in my drive" and then they upload that edited copy using the google drive tab, are they able to upload several files or just one? The examples I find only ever show the most simple submission for sake of clarity, but I give projects with multiple tasks, so I want to know if they can submit using the google drive tab several files.

I know the external tool only allows for one submission and does not allow for groups, but on the plus side, it makes a copy for the students.

I know with "regular" files it is possible for students to submit more than one, but I'm not positive if it's possible when submitting a google doc.  But, it is possible to re-submit an assignment as long as it's still open.  So a student could always use the re-submit option to get you additional google doc files.  If this happens, in speedgrader you'll see a dropdown list at the top right where you can view each submission and see when they were submitted.
