Managing your Canvas instance requires attention to many details, but sometimes deadlines and certain responsibilities can sneak up on you!  As your Customer Success Managers, we have created an action item field guide to support Canvas Admins throughout the year, called the Customer Lifecycle & Annual Success Strategies! As a baseline template, you can customize specific needs for your institution based on personnel and information distribution. You can watch this brief overview video to learn how to make the most out of this amazing new resource!

The purpose of this document is to outline various best practices, resources, reminders, workflows, and processes for Canvas Admins to stay cognizant of throughout their Canvas Customer lifecycle. The goal of this document is to help Canvas Admins stay on track as they either prepare to or continue to roll out Canvas at their institutions. Below you’ll find resources and best practices for Canvas Admins broken down into focus areas throughout the Canvas Customer Lifecycle. It is recommended to make a copy of this document, make edits according to your district strategic plans, and share with appropriate internal teams.

Areas of Focus

  • Training & Professional Development
  • Canvas Vision, Goals, Adoption, & Strategic Planning
  • Content Creation & Distribution
  • SIS Integration Resources & Best Practices
  • Administrative Tasks, Best Practices, and Resources

*Note: Timeline is based on common start and end dates for schools and districts in North America. Please adjust as needed for your own institution.

  • 6-9 Months Before School Start | January - March (Q1)
  • 3-6 Months Before School Start | April - June (Q2)
  • 0-3 Months Before School Start | July - September (Q3)
  • 0-3 Months After School Start | October - December (Q4)

For those Admins who handle all responsibilities for Canvas, this main template will give you specific completion tasks that should be considered and accomplished at notable times of the year. If you have particular individuals who are in charge of Professional Development or training, however, you can also distribute just those particular specific guidelines to those personnel members.

Above all else, our hope was to minimize searching for particular deadlines by having everything available in one place!  As always, if you have additional clarifying questions, please reach out to your Canvas CSM or CSM team!

If you've made it to the bottom of this blog, AWESOME! Continue learning about other Administrative ideas like this post - What is a “Principal’s Corner” and why do you need one?  that you can also use to support and communicate with staff using Canvas.

If you have other specific deadlines or ideas that might assist other admins, please drop them below so we can continue to revise and inform our community!
