Managing Local Image Links w/ API-based posting

I write all my content locally and post Announcements, Pages, Assignments, etc. through an API client.  This works great for text, but becomes impractical when I have local image links, and want to upload the image and link to them from canvas.  Inspecting image links in documents produced through the web interface shows them to be quite complex. Has anyone here looked into the best way to achieve this goal, probably by uploading the image files, grabbing the new link, and in a final pre-posting step, modifying the HTML of the page, announcement, or whatever?

I would love some hints! Thanks much.
