Hello from Lawrence S. Ting School in Vietnam!
As educators who have been using Canvas LMS since 2019, we understand the challenges of creating quizzes efficiently. That’s why we’ve developed a free tool at https://utility.lsts.edu.vn/convert-quiz. This tool allows you to convert questions from a DOCX file into QTI format, which can be imported directly into Canvas to create quizzes or item banks in no time.

Step 1: Prepare a DOCX File with Questions (download template here, or the attached file in this post)

  • Questions: Use the Numbered List Paragraph Style for questions (e.g., 1., 2., etc.). Order does not matter.
  • Multiple-choice answers: Use the List Paragraph Style, marked alphabetically (e.g., a), b), or A., B.). Indicate correct answers with an exclamation mark !.
    Example:

    1. What is 2+2?
    a) 3
    b) !4
    c) 5
  • Multiple answers: Add [ ] before the question text. Mark correct choices with an asterisk *.
    Example:

    2. Select all prime numbers:
    [*] 2
    [*] 3
    [ ] 4
  • Content supported:
    • Text, images, tables, formulas (use Microsoft Equation for formulas)
    • Special characters: Enclose in double quotes (" ") or backticks (``), e.g.,
, <=.
  • Use
at the start of the second line if the question spans multiple lines.
  • Code lines are not supported.

Step 2: Convert DOCX File to QTI

  1. Visit https://utility.lsts.edu.vn/convert-quiz.
  2. Upload your DOCX file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Download the generated QTI file (zipped format) after conversion.

Step 3: Import the QTI File into Canvas

  1. Go to your Canvas course.
  2. Click "Import Existing Content" on the homepage or select "Import Course Content" from the Settings page.
  3. In the Content Type dropdown menu, select "QTI .zip file".
  4. Click "Choose File" and upload the QTI file.
  5. Click "Import" and wait for the process to complete.
  6. Check the Quizzes section in your course for the imported quiz or item bank.

@Greyhound this is handy.. we should play with this.. In the past, I have had difficulty with it marking right answers.. I have also used Question Well (an ai tool) to create sample quiz questions from Youtube videos. it will let you export in QTI.. .Chat GPT will also allow you to generate quiz questions and if prompted, export in QTI - but check the answers for sure..

I agree @DrTerriC . Much easier than manually entering in the quiz questions. We will have to try this out!

I was trying out QuestionWell the other day and whilst it creates the qti in a one step process, you are stuck with the questions it gives you and only 10 multiple choice.

With a bit of work, I have got our Chatbot helper MindJoy to create sets of questions that can be copied and pasted into Word in the desired format. Staff can add images in the Word document - at that works brilliantly or just upload the file to your site to create the QTI for Canvas.

The feedback feature is great too - makes such a big difference

This is an amazing tool that needs wider recognition and support. I will write a blog post about it this week.

Thank you for sharing so freely in the community!

Thank @GideonWilliams for your encouragement.

I promise that this is free forever, we are still developing more functions as user's suggestions.

For example you can add multiple DOCX files at the same time to save time, it will convert all at one and give you back the ZIP file that you can extract to have multiple QTI files.
