Portfolio EAP release notes

This content was part of our Early Adopter Program and may not reflect the current experience. We're keeping it available to provide historical context and highlight how the feature has evolved.

Overview

During the Early Adopter Program, participants will have access to foundational features designed to support both structured assessment portfolios for educators and admins, and personal showcase portfolios for learners. This access allows users to explore and provide feedback on key functionalities before the full product launch.

Features Available in the EAP

For Educators and Admins (Evaluation Portfolio)

  • Select specific Canvas courses to create learner groups and assign evaluation portfolios.

  • Build structured portfolios with detailed instructions, clear section breakdowns, and defined evidence submission expectations.

  • Define the types of evidence learners must submit (e.g., coursework, projects, extracurricular activities).

  • Associate competencies or outcomes with each evidence item; once all linked evidence is marked complete, the overall portfolio competency is verified.

  • Optionally configure portfolios to auto-award a Canvas Credentials badge upon learner completion.

  • Access a centralized dashboard displaying all assigned portfolios with real-time visibility into learner progress and evidence submission status.

  • Provide detailed feedback on individual evidence items, including comments, completion marking, and revision requests.

  • Continue grading Canvas Assignments linked to portfolios using SpeedGrader.

For Learners (Evaluation Portfolio)

  • Access all assigned evaluation portfolios via a dedicated Portfolio app located in the main Canvas navigation.

  • View personalized educator guidance and submission expectations for each portfolio, including competency alignment.

  • Submit a wide range of evidence, such as coursework, extracurricular projects, and professional experiences, supporting files, images, videos, and embedded content.

  • Tag peers when submitting group or collaborative evidence linked to Canvas courses.

  • Add reflective narratives to each evidence item to contextualize submissions and link them to learning outcomes or competencies.

  • Continuously update and revise portfolio evidence until educator review and marking are complete.

For Learners (Showcase Portfolios)

  • Independently create personal showcase portfolios without needing educator or admin assignment setup.

  • Add portfolio-specific content beyond coursework, including jobs, internships, and extracurricular activities.

  • Tag evidence with competencies to highlight skill development and strengths.

  • Import previously completed Canvas Assignments to integrate academic work into the portfolio narrative.

  • Use a modern, intuitive interface featuring improved visual design and organization tools for personalized portfolio creation.

Important Notes

  • Access to the Portfolio EAP is limited to your institution’s Canvas Beta environment.

  • Use the password PortEAP_2025 to authorize access.

  • The Beta environment resets weekly on Mondays; portfolio data will not carry over to the Production environment.

  • The Early Adopter Program runs from May 28th to June 18th, 2025 (3 weeks).

  • Provide feedback through the in-product Give Feedback button or via the Canvas Portfolio Bugs & Usability Discussion page in the Community.
