I want to create an event on the course calendar that only applies to one of my student groups.

Sorry to see that your question has been unanswered here in the Community for quite a while.  Unfortunately, I do not think that you can create events just for a specific group you've created in your course.  As a work-around, you could go into the group's homepage within your course, and then you could create an announcement just for that specific group letting them know the details of your event.  It would be their responsibility to add it to their own calendar if they wanted.  Do you think that would work for your needs?
