[ARCHIVED] Question about Peer Review Feature

Creating a course that is completely self-paced and will have open registration. Does the peer review feature allow for optional peer reviews? For instance, I have the option as a student to submit my work for another student to review. I can't see if the peer review feature is set up in that way.

peer reviews are optional and aren't graded items. In my experience with peer review you can't do exactly what you want but there are workarounds.

1. You can assign a due date for an assignment and set up automatic peer reviews. Students who haven't submitted by the due date will not receive or provide peer reviews. Those who want to take part in the peer review process could submit by that given date. You can manually assign peer reviews after the automatic date passes if you choose to do so. Students can resubmit their papers within that same assignment or you could set up a separate "peer review" assignment. 

       a. One benefit of allowing resubmissions within the same assignment is that you can go back and forth between submissions easily. You can also see the peer reviews they received while you grade.

      b. One benefit of setting up a different "final" assignment is that you can provide direct feedback on the Doc Viewer if it isn't peer reviewed. You can't access the Doc Viewer if you use peer reviews. You could also set different due dates for the optional peer review assignment and the final assignment.

2. You could ask for students to sign-up at the beginning of the course to receive and provide peer reviews. You'd have to manually assign them as submissions come in. 

In my experience, anonymous peer reviews lend themselves to more honest feedback.
