[ARCHIVED] Using Marked Complete

  • I am using Canvas with my faculty to avoid having a long meeting at the start of the year.  The assignments do not require submissions, and I have them mark each assignment complete as they finish.  How do I view that they are marked complete?  Do I have to have a submission or can I view that they marked an assignment complete?

@carolyn_bona  Welcome to the Canvas Community!

Setting an assignment to "mark as complete" in the module provides a convenience to the student that lets them manage their activities in the course. In How do I mark a module item as done for a module requirement? , students are cautioned:

You may be able to mark online or external tool submission assignments as done. However, you must still submit the assignment for your instructor to grade.

So as the teacher, a student's ability to mark the assignment as complete is an action confined to their end; to record completion and add a grade to the gradebook, the teacher needs to grade the submissions.
