I have the column in gradebook.  It will not let me enter grades.  This has happened before and isn't addressed in helps.  I usually find it by accident and then forget it until next time and have to waste time trying to do just the simple entering of grades.

Hi @SarahFallis -

I am not sure if I understand your issue completely.  The way I read your question is that you are in the gradebook view and for an assignment in the gradebook you want to enter grades in for students directly(not going to speedgrader).  This behavior is not one that I would expect and it does not make sense to me.

I have done that several times and never encountered an issue with grade entry directly in the gradebook view.

I just click on the box where the grade goes and when it is highlighted, I enter the grade.  If you are not able to do that, then it sounds like something that your school system has possibly blocked(somehow) with their version of Canvas.  

Note: sometimes I have to select a student and then use the up arrow or down arrow to move one student to actually be able to enter the grade (i.e select the box, hit down arrow and then up arrow to get back to the student in question).  Maybe this is the issue that you are having.

once one grade has been entered, just use the down arrow to move to the next student.

I'm not clear on what you're experiencing. Are you unable to click in the cell al together (is it greyed out)? Is there an error message? Some thoughts regarding potential issues:

If the cell is greyed out, you may have intentionally or unintentionally differentiated who the assignment is assigned to under the "assign to" section of the assignment settings. If an assignment is not assigned to everyone the gradebook cells for those students are not editable.

Is your institution using grading periods? Some institutions use settings that close a grading period after a set date. When that is the case, instructors cannot enter scores for assignments in that closed grading period. Along these lines, is the assignment due date set to one that falls during an active grading period?

Do you have full teaching rights to the course or are you working in a capacity like TA or other role where your permissions to use the Canvas gradebook are limited?
