Missing Status in Elementary View

I see a problem developing with the missing status for Elementary - When a teacher has an assignment set with the submission type as "Online" or any setting requiring an actual submission in Canvas, and then a student turns in the assignment on paper, the teacher can go to the gradebook and give the student a score and remove the missing status if it is past the due date. The problem is the trigger for missing lies in the online submission itself and does not actually remove it as missing because there was no online submission. So, students are still seeing the missing status in the Schedule view even though the teacher has graded the item and removed the missing status in the gradebook.

This scenario will most likely happen very often in Elementary school. Teachers need a way to say that the assignment has been submitted on paper, without changing the online submission settings to lock out students at home and have that trigger the submission flag so Canvas will not continue to show it as missing for students that already have a grade.

This would help alot of teachers and students!

Good catch, I just tested and and am seeing the same behavior. It seems that the rule for "missing" items on the schedule tab is based on submission state, not the missing flag.

I also noticed that the schedule tab was displaying old assignments in the missing list. I thought this was brought up in one of the video and that the missing count would be scoped to the current grading period. Looking at my test student's course, I have 2 assignments from August with due dates before 1st quarter began on 8/30. I was expecting to see those excluded from the schedule tab. Students who move mid-year could end up seeing dozens of assignments when everything from first part of the year is immediately flagged missing.

I am trying to build a better understanding of what triggers missing in C4E as well. This is what I have so far:

Hi, all! Thank you for starting this post, @llomax, and to all for sharing what you are seeing. @audra_agnelly, you are correct in that missing typically refers to the submission not being completed. @dcrandall, to confirm I am interpreting your char correctly, is this also what you are referencing with the 'No' in your chart for 'Can you remove the auto generated missing?' for Online submission types?

I am working with a team of our engineers to adjust the way that this is scoped to allow for removal of the missing designation when given a score by the teacher and manually removing the missing label. This will better align with what missing means in classrooms - that nothing has been submitted in any format, whether online or via paper/pencil, by email, etc.

As for scoping missing to just the current grading period, I will need to dig in deeper with our engineering team to be sure that is scoped properly. More to come.

@jsailor - Yes. The 'no' under "Can you remove the auto generated missing?" is there b/c teachers are unable to turn off the missing IF they receive student work via paper or other non-digital means.

HI Friends, I was just asked about this 30 min ago but by a HS teacher. SO, the issue that ...

THIS IS NOT JUST A Elementary C4E issue, this is a Canvas wide issue that everyone would benefit from.

Just a thought

This is a problem we have struggled with for years in the Classic Canvas dashboard as well. Many teachers have students submit an image to remove the missing, but it would be wonderful if a grade could suffice to keep the missing label off!

Thanks @jsailor . RE: "I am working with a team of our engineers to adjust the way that this is scoped to allow for removal of the missing designation when given a score by the teacher and manually removing the missing label."

When the "new" gradebook was introduces, I was advocating for removal of the missing flag when a grade was entered, but I've found that's not always a uniform rule. Missing work may have a score of 0 entered by the teacher, and I know some teachers use a minimum 50% grade policy.

The submissions api shows a submitted field and a missing flag field, seems just to be a design oversight in which field is being pulled to most accurately represent the true status.

@christopher_gil, you are correct that this affects those beyond Canvas for Elementary users, but showing the missing at the bottom of the schedule is only in C4E. Either way, we are working out solutions that should benefit all Canvas users.

@audra_agnelly, the lack of a uniform rule is exactly why I've been grappling with this. I want to be sure that we handle things in the appropriate way for various teachers and philosophies. I think our missing policies help with this issue as long as users are aware of the option to use them. As for your final statement, that is what I also suspect, but we'll dig in to be sure that is all it is and nothing more.

@jsailor  This is just an update on what we are experiencing...

Teachers were hoping the beginning of the quarter would be a good time to clear 'Missing'...  Unfortunately, the end-of-quarter does not remove "Missing". Also, the available "Until" date does not remove missing.  Teachers wanting to clear any unwanted "Missing" tags need to use Gradebook to manually remove Missing for each student. However, If the assignment is an "Online" submission, only the student can clear missing by turning it in. This is a lot of work to clear amongst the many students/assignments.

Are there any known options to 'clear' missing for an entire assignment?

@jsailor any update on your earlier comment, "As for scoping missing to just the current grading period, I will need to dig in deeper with our engineering team to be sure that is scoped properly. More to come. "

We switched quarters today so questions are starting to come in.

@audra_agnelly, I have a ticket in with our engineers to ensure that the missing items listed (as well as the number identified on the subject cards) are scoped to the current grading period. I don't yet have a date for release, but this will be worked on soon.

@dcrandall, when you ask about the new quarter being a good time to clear the missing, does this mean that you are also using grading periods? If so, it seems the work done in this ticket will also solve the problem for your students and teachers.

@jsailor Yes, we would love to be able to have missing 'clear' when starting a new quarter. Students would get a fresh start every quarter. Teachers would have fewer assignments to "Excuse" for new students.

@jsailor  Having missing clear at quarter's end will help immensely with new students as well.

New students upon enrolling see all late assignments as missing. Teachers can release these missing assignments as "Excused" but only for assignments for the current quarter. Teachers don't have access to previous quarters. Only Admin can get in and excuse assignments in previous quarters.

So... yes we would very much like to see 'missing' drop at quarter's end.
