What is student_entered_score in the submission_fact table?

We can see a student_entered_score field in the submission_fact table. What does this represent? We see "TBD" in the documentation. There is a "what-if" feature that I'm not overly familiar with, but may be what is represented by this field. Has anyone used this field and have understanding of what it includes?

Hi Glenn,

The student_entered_score in the submission_fact table is indeed related to the what-if scores entered by students. The what-if feature allows a student to make changes to the grades of assignments already released as well as the ones in pipeline. This helps students get a better idea of how many points they need to make a particular grade or where they could've performed better to ensure a certain grade.

We are trying to decide if it makes sense to include this in the Canvas Data dataset. Do you think this is useful data to have? Can you think of any scenarios where this data might be of help?

Hi Padmashree. Gradecraft is an LMS dedicated to supporting a gameful classroom experience. A large part of their application revolves around a Grade Predictor tool that allows students to perform the same sort of "what if?" scenario modeling. I believe they have researched the use of the grade predictor and how that affects behavior in the course, more than comparing the predicted score vs. actual once it is complete. I would guess "student_entered_score" would not be for the crowd deciding where to start in Learning Analytics, but could become useful for those following the Gradecraft research or doing similar work on their own.
