URGENT: Canvas LMS Self-Hosted – High Memory usage from background processes

Hi Support Team,
I'm currently running a self-hosted instance of Canvas LMS on a DigitalOcean droplet with the following specs:
-
16 GB Memory
-
8 AMD vCPUs
-
320 GB Disk
-
Region: NYC3
-
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 (LTS) x64
I've noticed that the Canvas application generates a large number of background processes during normal use, which eventually leads to memory overload on the server.
If needed, I can manually restart the Canvas server or kill some of the heavier processes to restore performance temporarily. However, I believe this issue might require deeper investigation, and I would recommend opening a support ticket with the Canvas development team to get their input.
Some users have also reported similar issues in the past, and there appear to be a few workarounds involving changes to Canvas’s configuration files. That said, modifying core configuration settings can be risky and could impact system stability.
Additionally, I have plenty of free disk space available, which is used for video uploads. I recently uploaded 4 videos, each around 60 MB, so disk usage is not a concern in this case.
Please let me know how you’d like to proceed, or if you need any further logs or details from my side.
Thanks in advance,
