Turnitin for Discussions?

Jump to solution

Apologies if I missed it here...

I have seen and followed the comments about adding Turnitin integration into Canvas Discussions in other places in the community.  I did not see anything here.  We are certainly advocating for the integration of Turnitin in the Discussions Redesign.

Thanks

Hi @bjholt, we are definitely exploring plagiarism checker solutions, including a Turnitin integration. We'll update as we get further along in our discovery.

As a faculty member as well as admin for Canvas curriculum, I can honestly say this (adding Discussions to the TurnItIn suite) is a feature that is much needed. Academic Integrity is an integral part of providing students with a safe and authentic learning experience. I really see no downside (besides possibly cost of capital to build) to having this feature added, and the upside is tremendous.

Hello,

I wonder if there is an update to this? The need for Turnitin or a plagiarism checker in Discussion Boards is high. I am routinely spending a lot of time manually uploading DBs to Turnitin. This is a much needed upgrade as students know that there is no way for a faculty member to easily check their work against Turnitin in a DB. I have even had students challenge me for turning their work in manually because they know DBs aren't checked against Turnitin.  Please advise if there is a fix in the works.

Thank you.

@bjholt  Thank you for raising this issue.

@Katrina-Hess Thank you for including this in the Discussion redesign.

Ensuring authentic engagement in the Discussion assignments is crucial. As others have shared, we are seeing copy/pasted posts from previous classes, different sections, other students, and information from web. Many faculty are teaching large classes or several classes, adding up to large numbers, and the current situation is untenable.

So appreciate that you recognize the problem and are working on a solution. We look forward to the updates. Please include us in any updates you have.

@bjholt  -  my current approach is to use the browser extension 'Print Friendly & PDF' to export the discussion content to pdf so I can then upload the file to Turnitin. This works well enough for detecting issues after the fact as part of grading, but as all the posts are collected to a single file some of the functionality is lost.

i.e. attribution of content to the poster in the TII database, separate originality reports, students do not have the opportunity to review a draft....

Then again, Turnitin has /is developing a Draft Coach tool..  This could be useful.   https://www.turnitin.com/products/features/draft-coach

this is solving only part of the problem, one of the purposes of attaching Turnitin is also formative, so students can see their score and learn, plagiarism check is not only a matter of policing

Please make this a high priority.

Plagiarism seems to appear whenever a chance arises.  If we could get discussion boards monitored also, that would be a huge improvement.  Thanks!

Hi @DavidSemenyna, could you let me know what you mean by " If we could get discussion boards monitored"?

@Katrina-Hess  Great question! I think it would be great if discussion board posts could be added to TurnItIn's suite of Plagiarism detection so if someone is copying a previous discussion post that could be identified. I hope that makes sense!

Discussions are an important part of our course activity.  It would be tremendous to have an integration with Turnitin that works for discussion posts and replies.  We have been wanting this for so long!  Please make this happen!

The ability to add Turnitin to Discussion replies would assist in managing the online classroom and grading for faculty! This feature would be an excellent addition to Canvas!

As an administrator and instructor it is important to have the ability to check originality on both discussion posts and major writing assignments. My current practice when I suspect plagiarism is to do a quick, and often fruitless, google search.

Has TurnItIn been integrated into DBs? Or does the instructor have to submit the students' posts the Turnitin?

@KathyDButler - No, Turnitin is not available in discussions, either using the current tool or in the redesign.  As far as I know, it is not being considered for inclusion.  The redesign seems to be more about user interface changes than adding major features.

I'm disappointed that Turnitin isn't available or that a basic similarity checker cannot be developed somehow. Discussions are essential to my coursework but I am plagued by similar sentence structure and  similar phrasing across posts. Manually checking each post is burdensome and not viable over the longterm.

Is canvas considering this issue at all? It would be of great benefit to educators.

I agree that Turnitin (a plagiarism checker) is needed in discussions. When we have had the need to perform manual checks between discussions and different course sections, it takes a lot of time. Many times when we have to perform these checks, we find that plagiarism has occurred. I would like to see Canvas and Turnitin work together on a solution for discussions.
