The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December.
Read our blog post for more info about this change.
AI Rubric Creator is a feature that helps educators quickly generate high-quality, editable rubrics for assignments using AI. It uses the assignment name and description to suggest rubric criteria, point values, and performance level descriptions.
Enable the following feature flags in your Course Settings:
Once enabled, find AI Rubric Creator when adding or editing a rubric to assignments. Look for the 'Generate with AI' button.
At minimum, you’ll need to enter the assignment name and a short description. The more context you provide, the better the AI's suggestions will be.
Yes! You have full control. You can edit, delete, or add new criteria just like any standard Canvas rubric.
AI Rubric Creator is especially effective for:
- Essays or written responses
- Presentations
- Projects or group work
- Open-ended assignments
Currently, AI Rubric Creator is designed for open-ended assignments that require subjective grading.
Beta users have rated AI-generated rubrics 4.0/5 for usefulness. While not always perfect, the suggestions often save 10–20 minutes per rubric and cover 70–90% of what educators need.
The AI is trained on broad academic language and rubric conventions. While it can adapt to a range of subjects and levels, we recommend reviewing and personalizing the rubric before publishing.
At launch, AI Rubric Creator is optimized for English. Support for additional languages may be added in the future.
Is student data used to generate the rubrics?
No. The AI only uses the assignment name and description. No student submissions, grades, or personal data are accessed or processed. Please see the Nutrition Facts for additional details.
Not at this time. The AI does not currently retain user-specific data or learn from individual usage patterns.
Yes! In early testing:
- Rubric usage increased from 34% to over 50% in active courses
- Teachers saved an average of 30% time per rubric
- Many users reported using the feature more than once and integrating it into their normal assignment setup flow
Unlike external tools or competing LMS features, AI Rubric Creator is built directly into Canvas. There’s no need to copy/paste or switch platforms, it’s fully integrated and ready to use within your existing workflow.
Try revising the assignment description to be more specific and add any relevant information (like standards, specific instructions) to the input fields prior to generating the rubrics.
Ensure the feature has been enabled for your institution or course. Go to course settings > feature options and check to see if the Enhanced Rubrics and AI Generated flags have been enabled.
If it’s still not appearing, contact your admin or support team.
Yes, we welcome your input! Use the in-product feedback form or contact your Canvas support team. Your feedback helps us improve the quality and relevance of AI suggestions.
Yes, based on user feedback, usage data, and continued research, we plan to expand and refine AI Rubric Creator over time.
Note: You can only embed guides in Canvas courses. Embedding on other sites is not supported.
