[ARCHIVED] Students cheating on Quiz

In viewing student logs of a timed quiz I have given in Canvas, some show that the student is pausing the quiz, then resuming (after they have looked up the answer on their phone?). These are virtual students that I cannot monitor. 

How are they doing that, and how can I prevent it? I am very new to Canvas so I don't know all the tricks!

Aside from using proctoring software or setting up a zoom/meet and requiring test-takers keep their cameras on, there's really no way to enforce rules regarding use of other devices while testing that I can think of.

Nor is there in face-to-face/mask-to-mask courses... a student bent on cheating, with the resources, can pay another to attend every class, write every paper, and take every test for them, masquerading as the student so completely that a professor could not tell, unless they asked for picture ID to verify their roll sheet.

But, to your question: in Canvas, even if we disallow students from clicking away from the quiz, they can still, as you pointed out, use a second device to access the net and look for answers.
