metadata field for sections and not just users

We really could use a metadata field in canvas sections, similar to the one they have for users, so we can store relevant information about the section that canvas doesn't have right now. Just a single general purpose string field that we could put some JSON data in would give us a lot more power as LTI application developers with minimal work from Instructure.
Things like whether this is a distance education section or not and what the meeting pattern is for it are good examples of the kinds of data that we could use this for. This would be really valuable for LTI Integrations. If we could store course and section metadata we could make much more powerful integrations in a much shorter time frame, because we wouldn't have to deal with so many integration points to get the few bits of relevant data Canvas is missing.
Anyone else have a similar need?
