For revision purposes, I often create a 10 question quiz using questions from the item bank, pick the Choose x questions at random feature and then allow students multiple attempts.
One of my concerns with creating quiz from an item bank and the random question option is that the same questions could appear again and again.
If I use the new Build on Last attempt feature will that guarantee that those questions answered correctly will no longer appear in repeated quizzes.
If this was the case, then it would be amazing!
Anyone have an answer?
Thanks
OK, so I tested it out with a 3 question quiz drawing on 3 random questions from a pool of 50.
What happened:
If I scored 1/3 the first time, then on the next attempt I only saw the 2 questions I did not get right
When i scored 3/3, the quiz closed. It did not, as I hoped it might, replace those 3 questions with 3 new ones :O(
The other thing I noticed with Build on last attempt, that maybe should be emphasized more clearly, is that students can see their answers AND the correct answers when reviewing the quiz. The teacher would need to change the settings on student view:
You might think that this feature would be prevented if students are redoing the quiz each time. By seeing the answers, does it not defeat the purpose of this approach??
I wonder how many people don't realise and forget to change the settings above...!
@GideonWilliams In regards to the same questions from the Item Bank appearing when a student builds on the last New Quiz attempt, this is because of how a quiz attempt functions in Canvas. For both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes, the questions that exist in the quiz when the student begins an attempt are the questions that are part of that quiz attempt. There are a variety of reasons for this, but since the questions in an attempt are determined when the student first starts the quiz, then those questions are the ones the student will view if they re-access this attempt--whether to build on it or because their computer shut down and they need to re-open it to finish and submit. Additionally, if the questions were reselected from the bank when re-attempting the NQ, there is a chance the students had correct previously would appear and the student might be able to get the same question multiple times in the same quiz.
Thanks Nicolette
My worry was mainly concerned with the fact that unless I change the feedback feature, students would see the answers to the ones they got wrong so not really making it an effective way to keep on answering the questions..
