[OPEN] Default due time still apply when editing assignments with due dates already set on Calendar

Canvas

Engineers are currently investigating the issue.

Description

Editing an assignment from the Calendar applies the default due time set under course settings, even if the assignment is already created with a different due time. Based on the deploy notes Canvas Release Notes (2022-04-16) : The Assignment Default Due time will not update existing assignments with due dates already set.

If the user carried on with saving the assignment, the due date will be updated inadvertently.

Expected Behavior

The due date should be displaying the correct due time if it’s already been set on the assignment when accessing it via the calendar.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisite: A published course with at least one teacher enrolled.

  1. Create an assignment with a due date/time.

  2. Under course settings, set up a default due time to a different timestamp.

  3. Navigate to Calendar and try editing this assignment, you’ll notice that the due date is defaulting to whatever was set up under course settings.

  4. If you click either on submit or more options and proceed with saving the assignment, it will change the due date. Users won’t always pay attention to the due time defaulting to another timestamp, which might cause some confusion.
