[OPEN] Reopening a timed New Quiz submission gives the student the full time limit - part 2

Issue Documented: 2025-11-17
Canvas

Engineers are currently investigating the issue.

Description

When a student completely runs out of time in a New Quiz with a time-limit; when reopened through Moderate, the UI will allow students to fully interact with the quiz responses for an unlimited duration until the page is reloaded.

  • UI does not indicate the expected time limit.

  • When the page is reloaded a “Times Up!" message appears.

Expected Behavior

If a quiz is reopened without an indicated time limit, the student(s) should get a “Times Up!" message immediately and not allowed to change the quiz answers.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisites: a published course with at least one student enrolled:

  1. Create a New Quiz with a time limit (a few minutes will suffice).

  2. As a student, take the New Quiz and leave the quiz timer to run out.

  3. As a teacher, Reopen the Quiz for the student from the Moderate tab.

  4. As a student, Click ‘Resume’ and notice that the timer has no time limit set.

    1. If you refresh the page, a “Times Up!" message will appear.
