This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 10/23/24.

Description

Students are able to subscribe to discussions with the "Participants must respond to the topic before viewing other replies" setting and they also receive notifications.

Expected Behavior

Students should not be able to subscribe or receive notifications before replying when this setting is enabled.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisites: Have one course with a few students. Make sure that discussion notification emails are enabled for students.

  1. As the teacher, create a discussion and enable "Participants must respond to the topic before viewing other replies"

  2. As the student navigate to discussions.

  3. Open the discussion and click on the subscribe icon.

  4. Observe that Canvas allows the student to subscribe. Do not reply as the student.

  5. As the teacher or another student reply to the discussion.

  6. Observe that the student receives the email notification with the teacher/student’s reply.
