One of the great things about Mastery Connect, and the Canvas + Mastery Connect integration, is the variety of different assessment types that are available. We’re excited to review a few of these, including how to create an assessment from a purchased item bank, create a document-based assessment, import a Canvas quiz, and align a Canvas Assignment to a Mastery Tracker! Creating an Assessment From a Purchased Item Bank

  • If a district has purchased an item bank(s), users will have access to expertly-developed, tightly-aligned items to create assessments that tell them what students know and where they need to take their instruction next. Here are a few Pro Tips:
    • Use the filtering options when creating an assessment from an item bank. This will make it easy to quickly identify items based on standard, question types, DOK levels, and more.
    • Use item banks to incorporate interactive, innovative, and rigorous question types in assessments.
    • The “Select Randomly” option quickly selects multiple items based on a quantity of your choice and the applied filters.

Creating a Document Based Assessment

  • Document-based assessments make it possible for educators to quickly bring in an existing assessment they may have in a PDF or .Doc file. This will allow teachers to deliver existing assessments and capture the data in their Mastery Connect trackers. Here is a Pro Tip:
    • Teachers must know the standard alignment per item on the assessment, as well as the assessment’s answer key.

Importing a Canvas Quiz into Mastery Connect

  • For those using the Canvas + Mastery Connect integration, you can import quizzes created in Canvas into the Mastery Tracker. The Import Canvas Quizzes button provides the ability to convert Classic and New Quizzes into Mastery Connect Assessments. Here is a Pro Tip:
    • Once the quiz is converted, teachers should be prepared to align each assessment item to the corresponding Mastery Tracker standards.

Canvas Assignments to Mastery Tracker

  • With the Canvas + Mastery Connect integration, Canvas Assignments can be aligned to a standard in Mastery Connect, creating a raw-score assessment for the selected standard in the Mastery Tracker.

General Assessment Pro Tips:

  • Assessments can be saved as a draft by clicking the Exit button.
  • Creating assessments directly from a tracker eliminates the need to enter information like the subject, core, and class.
  • Item bank assessments offer the broadest range of item types in Mastery Connect.

Final Thoughts

The variety of assessment types available in Mastery Connect and in the Canvas + Mastery Connect integration makes the assessment process efficient, and offers a diverse array of opportunities to assess student learning!
