Item Banks vs Question Groups

We currently use question groups from Classic Quizzes so only a random selection of questions from each group is displayed in a live quiz. However one classic quiz can contain multiple groups.For example, if I have 10 questions in a quiz, I typically create 10 groups of 3 questions in each group.

With New Quizzes. is this feature only possible through Item Banks? Could someone confirm that the only way to accomplish this through Item Banks is to create one item bank per question group? If I have 10 groups of 3 questions in each group in a quiz, I have to create 10 item banks with 3 questions in each bank? This seems rather tedious.

Yes, that's what I've seen as well so for complex exams where an instructor has question alternatives (3 versions of each question for example and 10-50 questions) and is using groups in Classic Quizzes, this means there's a bank for each question in New Quizzes.  

• When I select from a bank in New Quizzes, I can pull in one specific question or I can select randomly from the entire bank.  There's not a group option within the quiz or an option to randomly select from a subset in a bank.  It's all the bank or just one question.
• There is an added option to randomize all questions in the quiz without creating a group or bank which is a nice feature option but that doesn't help with this scenario.  

If I'm missing something that would be great though!  Bank management is one of the biggest struggles I foresee for those transitioning.

Thank you for contacting the Instructure Community. Item banks are essentially the new quiz version of question banks. If you create a classic quiz and have 10 question groups linked to question banks pulling 3 questions per bank - you'd need to do the same with the item banks. You would need to create 10 separate item banks with how many questions you need per bank. Then you'd add 10 separate item banks picking 3 questions per bank etc. to be added to the quiz. I know it isn't the answer you are looking for, but hopefully it helps.

In the Classic version, you have the option to select specific questions from an Item Bank when creating a Question Group. However, this feature is not available in the New Quiz. Instead, you can only choose to include either all questions or just one. To work around this limitation, I created multiple Item Banks with similar questions but with a few variations in each so that they could be randomly selected as a group.

I hope this can be addressed soon as I currently have a large number of Item Banks in my account.
