I teach 6th grade math. 

I have a class that is split into two time periods - students begin the class with me, leave for lunch and elective classes, then return to finish their class with me. 

Is there a way to lock a quiz while in progress, then unlock when they return to me? I want to prevent the kids from continuing to take the quiz while they are at lunch and elective classes.

Have you tried unpublishing the quiz?  This might need some testing, because I'm not sure what will happen to the quizzes that are in progress. 

It is more tedious, but you can also go to the moderate tab and submit each in-progress attempt one at a time, by clicking on the in-progress indicator in the attempt column for each student.  If you keep track of which attempts you ended manually, you can then click the moderate button in the far right column of each, and select reopen when the students are on their way back to class.
