Preventing duplicate badges for Pathway

How do I prevent duplicate badges in a Pathway? I found an article from 2022, but it doesn't match what I see. I'm working on a Pathway where learners could complete a prerequisite step more than once, but we only want them to receive one badge for the prerequisite. With testing, we were unable to prevent this. Any tips would be most appreciated!
