I am a school counselor at the high school level and use Canvas regularly to check on my student's grades since many of our teachers use this platform for their classes and it doesn't always get transferred instantly to our main system. We as counselors use to "Act as User" to have the ability to look at all their classes and grades at once (if needed could click on the grade to see a full breakdown of the grade). However we have now lost this ability. To now check their grades, I have to find them in people, click on their information, and then sift through all of their classes (previous years, study skills/credit recovery, 1st semester, inactive classes, and currently enrolled classes) just to see their grades for those active classes. This adds more time and obstacles to properly do my job as a school counselor, when we already have limited time. I have been told that we are no longer able to "Act as User" which I understand. So, something that would help would be if after we get to their student information, that there would be either a section dedicated to current classes or even better, a grade button under the "message student" and "pair with observer" buttons. This would make academic advising a lot easier and less cumbersome in our already overloaded day. Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything from me. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Thomas Favero
@ThomasFavero What I have heard is you can not act as a user, you need to be paired to the user an observer to do the work.
Hey @ThomasFavero!
I am curious to know if you checked with your Canvas Administrator at your Institution? In the Community Guide titled How do I act as another user in an account? it states...
To act as a user in an account, admins must be assigned the Users - Act as permission.
I am wondering if this ability has been turned off for you for some reason. Checking with your Canvas Admin could confirm if this happened and potentially have it turned back on if it was turned off accidentally.
