Dear Canvas Credentials Community,
We’re always looking for ways to reduce setup friction and make your experience managing integrations as smooth as possible. That’s why we’re introducing a simpler, faster, and more reliable way to connect Canvas Credentials (soon to be Parchment Digital Badges) to Canvas LMS: Dynamic Registration.
This update will streamline how administrators configure our tool, saving time and minimizing the chance for errors, all while keeping you fully in control of how and where the tool appears.
What’s Changing?
We’re implementing support for LTI 1.3 Dynamic Registration, a standard from 1EdTech that automates the setup process between Canvas LMS and Canvas Credentials (soon to be Parchment Digital Badges).
Instead of manually entering configuration details, Canvas admins will soon be able to initiate setup with a single URL. Canvas will handle the rest by automatically retrieving our tool configuration and completing the registration behind the scenes.
Admins will still approve placements and visibility settings but without the tedious copy-paste steps.
Why This Matters
Our primary motivation for implementing Dynamic Registration is to offer greater customization and flexibility during setup. Admins will have more control to tailor the integration to their needs, such as configuring the tool name and setting the default visibility of placements during the process.
Beyond that, Dynamic Registration also makes setup:
- Faster – integration in minutes, not hours
- More reliable – less room for human error
- Aligned with best practices – using Canvas’s preferred setup method
- Future-ready – built on open standards supported across LMS platforms
By streamlining the integration and giving you more customization options, we help institutions get started quicker and ensure Canvas Credentials (soon to be Parchment Digital Badges) fits seamlessly into your environment.
What to Expect at Launch
When Dynamic Registration becomes available:
- Beta Release – August 18, 2025
Try it early, provide feedback, and help us refine the experience before general availability. - Production Release – September 1, 2025
Available to all Canvas Credentials (soon to be Parchment Digital Badges) customers with full support resources and documentation.
Setup Flow at a Glance
- In Canvas LMS, go to Admin > Developer Keys > + Developer Key (LTI Key).
- Paste the appropriate Dynamic Registration URL for your region (see below).
- Click Continue.
- Confirm your Canvas Credentials (soon to be Parchment Digital Badges) account email address.
- Select the organization you want to register with.
- Review Integration Visibility settings for course-level access.
- (Optional) Enable “Use with a self-hosted Canvas instance” and provide your Canvas API Client ID & Secret if needed.
- Submit the registration.
- Review and adjust permissions, data sharing, and placements in Canvas.
- Save and enable the tool.
🔎 Note: Default visibility applies only to the course-level placement. Admins can still enable or hide the tool at the course level after installation.
