As a long-time Canvas Community member, I've been watching conversations about this topic at least as far back as this 2016 question by @John_Lowe. My working understanding has been: To support "convenience" combinations, manually apply (to each student) the setting "this user can only view students in their assigned course section(s)". However, recently a colleague observed (and I've confirmed) a scenario I've not seen addressed: If a course uses Groups, students are able to (always) see the names of, and (sometimes) interact with, students in other Sections, even when the section-visibility setting above is applied. Thus, limiting users' visibility to same-section members in a Canvas course seems insufficient to prevent disclosure of other-section members' identities. The narrative and screenshots below illustrate. (Screenshots taken from a "demo" course with fictional student names/accounts.) In a Canvas course ("DEMO-101"), there are 2 Sections ("123" and "DEMO-101") [screenshot 1]. Student Ahayuta Achi is enrolled in Section "123", and can only view students in their assigned section [screenshot 2]. However, the instructor has created Groups in the Course. Ahayuta is able to view all Group members, regardless of their Section, and regardless of whether the instructor has populated the Groups manually, or automatically with the setting "Require group members to be in the same section" [screenshot 3]. Thus, Ahayuta can, by viewing Groups, discover the names of students enrolled in Sections of DEMO-101 different from their own Section. screenshot 1 screenshot 2 screenshot 3 I'd love to know how others here have evaluated and/or responded to this situation. Context: When using the *.ics URL from Canvas Calendar, faculty have noticed that some events do not appear in Outlook's calendar. In examining the *.ics sourcefile, I believe I've discovered a correlation: Events successfully appear in Outlook when their DTSTART and DTEND fields are formatted as follows: DTSTART:20211021T150000Z DTEND:20211021T180000Z Events fail to appear in Outlook when their DTSTART and DTEND fields are formatted as follows: DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20211020T000000 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20211020T000000 My 3 questions to the community: Has anyone else encountered this problem with Outlook Calendar? (Google Calendar seems to handle things just fine.) Has anyone else noticed the above correlation, or is there another explanation? Has anyone got a ready fix? 🙂

Hm, how intriguing! I've just tried both ways, in both Chrome 89 and Firefox 86, and it works for me in all cases. I have no plausible suggestion as to why you're seeing that behavior. Wish I had a better answer - I wonder what the HTML looks like, before-and-after saving...

Hi @Robbie_Grant ‌! Thanks for the follow-up. While a couple of the respondents here have suggested workarounds, the core behavior remains, and is problematic for my particular use-case. I wouldn't consider the question "answered" or resolved, and so would like to keep it open, if possible, to see if others might continue to have insight. I haven't responded lately just because other issues have been insistently calling for my attention. :smileygrin:

In response to a long-standing user need in the Canvas Community, I cobbled together the code snippet below. This page documents a fully-deployable end-user solution for anybody to test, tweak, and use to produce a plain-vanilla HTML version of a Canvas Quiz, which is printer-friendly from a browser. I share the code below, as well as describe a couple of its limitations. [for visibility, this document is duplicated as a Discussion in Q & A‌. There may be versioning discrepancies between them.] So what is this code? It's a bookmarklet - a tiny piece of JavaScript you save as a bookmark in your browser, then click to run when you're on the page where you want it to execute. What does it give me? A browser window containing the Quiz content in plain HTML. This can be either printed to paper, or saved as a pdf. How is this useful? As many have noted in the Idea forum, an easily-printable Quiz meets needs for accommodations and accessibility broadly, as well as students and schools in limited-connectivity or limited-hardware situations, and teachers and administrators in workflow and documentation situations which require hard copy. Is any admin-level support/installation needed? No - this code can be deployed by any Canvas user on their own. Are there any browser-specific caveats? Edge makes it annoyingly complex to manually create a bookmark(let). I honestly haven't found how to do it. The other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) are fine with it. I've tested the code in all 3 of these successfully. Other caveats? The usual: this is home-grown code, so I make no warranties. Test before deploying to production. Also, it relies upon the specific element id assigned to Quiz content as of this date - future changes to Canvas production code may break it. So you mentioned limitations. The script grabs the content from the "taking" or "previewing" environment. If you're just viewing the Quiz, you won't get anything. The script grabs the Quiz questions that are loaded onto the screen - meaning it's great unless... your Quiz has selected "Show one question at a time". There's zero capacity for handling anything to do with question banks, shuffling questions, etc. Straight-up wysiwyg. How do I deploy and use the code? Copy the code below. In your browser, create a new bookmark. (In Safari, you'll have to create the bookmark from some random website, then go back and "Edit Address".) In the "Location" or "URL" field, paste the code, then save the bookmark. Navigate to the Quiz, and click the "Preview" button. Hi all - In the spirit of community, sharing, hacking, etc., I want to share a half-baked bit of JavaScript that produces a print-friendly version of a Canvas Quiz. The attached screencapture is proof-of-concept only - it won't work, at the moment, in a production environment for various reasons - but I'm sure there are much smarter coders out there who could solve the issues. But the code does work (in a controlled environment) - it's not a mock-up or photoshop job. First the video demo: 0:01-0:23: the typical experience of browser-printing a Canvas Quiz. Kludgy and long. 0:24-1:00: the print-friendly end-product of the script, and how browser printing looks with it. The undone bit has to do with running that method out to some other webpage, which poses security issues; I cheated in the screencapture by pasting the Canvas Quiz code into a hidden <div> on the very page where I was running the script. Anyway, I hope it helps some. Alternatively, feel free to immediately tell me why this would never work in production, so I don't get anybody's hopes up.
