Agreed. We just found out about this in our standing meeting with our CSM, but had communicated the possibility of this feature to a group on campus who was looking forward to using it in Summer courses. As far as we knew, it was scheduled to land. Calling out it's absence, rather than simply omitting it from the Production release notes would be helpful for us as we plan and communicate these changes to the platform with our users.

After discussing this issue with our CSM, it was suggested that we propose a solution as part of this feature idea, so here is mine: Wording would have to be improved, but the general idea is to add a set of options before the import that lets instructors choose whether to have newly imported items replace previously imported items in destination course, or for new copies to be generated. If "Replace" is selected, there would be a pop-up warning them of the resulting changes:

I would like to re-iterate the need to have content imports *not* overwrite existing content. One incident caused an instructor to lose an assignment which already had student submissions and grades. Another incident occurred in a course with almost 500 students -- three of the quizzes were overwritten and the grades somehow were shifted to another set of three quizzes. This is can be and has been very disruptive to instructors who experience this issue. If Canvas accepts this as expected behavior, the least that can be done is to have a warning message pop up at the time of import that warns instructors that their content will be overwritten.

I had created a separate, more specific feature idea that I am hoping can get added to this more general request, which is for notifications to include the images that are in the original announcement. As others have probably mentioned: Currently, images that are added to an announcement via the Embed image function in the Rich Content Editor or from the Content Uploader >> Images tab do not appear in the notifications. As you can see in the notification, the message the instructor writes becomes somewhat confusing, as there isn't even a placeholder to denote the presence of an image that they are referring to. I seem to recall that there at least used to be an image tag, but this is no longer available. If the image is not going to be embedded, at least put a placeholder or a link to the image.

Thanks for the heads up, Stefanie. Unfortunately, I don't see my feature idea represented in these, as I not only want to be able to download the annotated files, but to also be able to print them. The download would have to be formatted such that they are printable, and that is not explicit in the other requests.

We have heard a few requests from instructors to get an export or printing function built into the Speedgrader that will allow them to print their annotated comments, similar to how track changes can be printed from Word (see screenshot). The closest workaround is to download the annotated submission, open in Acrobat Pro and follow these instructions, which would be time-consuming.

Supporting this feature idea and commenting on behalf of one of our instructors: Please increase the limit that has been placed on the number of posts in the People section of the website. This is currently set at 10 (the most recent 10). Why can't the full number of posts be retrieved? This would be a way for the instructor to double check the tally she gets from the Engagement Index and also a quick way to review all the posts that each student has done over the semester. This would be much better than going into the week by week record and having to track the posts of each student over the term. If the default can't be changed, then at least there could be an option for the professor to choose to see "all" of the posts a student has done over the term.

I'm not sure if someone else has added a comment about section-based attendance and how the gradebook will only show the grade for the section where attendance was last taken, so I'd like to add my request that this be addressed in any updates/improvements to the tool. This limitation is not mentioned in any of the documentation for the Attendance/Roll Call tool, and it causes a significant support burden to untangle, especially at the end of the term when there is a semester's worth of attendance data to painstakingly move/delete/recalculate. This comes up often for our instructors of large enrollment courses. It seems pointless to even allow users to take section-based attendance in the first place if the grade is not going to be calculated as a cumulative throughout all sections. If this is not going to be addressed in any updates to the tool, if a warning message could be added to the tool to let people know about this bug/limitation.

I looked at the feature just now and it still does get cut off, though at some point the comments column gets pushed down to show the link (short screencast, no audio: screencast-view-feedback.mp4 - Google Drive ) The work on this is likely still in progress, but I just wanted to mention my experience here.

The need for this has come up for our instructors who would like to see overall effort in the discussion forums. Many of our classes are face-to-face and activity in the online discussion forums is often just one part of their overall participation grade in a class. Having to make each forum graded and looking through each post can be time consuming, especially in large enrollment courses.

Currently, when new files are added to a course, a notification is sent to students with a link stating "You can view them here." However, this link simply directs them to the root folder of the Files tool (short screencast example, no audio: 2017-05-04_15-36-05.mp4 - Google Drive ), even though the files were uploaded to subfolders within Files. It also does not flag the newly uploaded files, so once users are in the Files tool, they can't tell which ones they are, since the notification doesn't list the file names. Suggestion for better communicating to users what and where the files are located: Listing the names of the files and the subfolders where they are located (if any), and/or making them links directly to the files themselves. Including the file name and/or linking directly to this file from the notification would help students better locate these new items. I went to the Submit Gradable Work Anonymously to Instructors session later in the day, and found that this idea of anonymous grading would also help to make courses more culturally responsive. Also, here's a photo of the room right before the session: Feels good to see this many folks interested in making culturally responsive classes in Canvas!

It would also be very helpful and appreciated if the verbiage could make clear that this setting is per-user in addition to being per-session, and that if there are rules in a course's assignment groups, it could cause confusion among course instructors.

Re-submitting my comment from a previous, archived Feature Idea, in case it helps this current idea with visibility: Would like to add our voice to this as well, since this is a commonly requested and desired feature by some instructors at our university, and one that doesn't seem unreasonable. It's almost doable by using Peer Review in combination with Rubrics, but: It's too labor-intensive to assign the peer reviews one-by-one, especially in a class with 60+ people The person who is being graded can see the teammate who graded them The grades don't get totaled or put into the gradebook One instructor allocates 100 points for each student to distribute amongst their group, including themselves. Setting this limit seems to make this kind of group evaluation work. I haven't found a workaround in Canvas to make this type of peer grading within groups possible. It would be a great if not necessary feature to have if we're going to be encouraging group work and peer evaluation as a practice for deeper engagement.

A student, who is also a representative in our university's Student Technology Council, reported to us that many of his classmates, including members of the Council, felt that they were receiving too many notifications from the LMS. Specifically, they were getting frequent grade change notifications from their large-enrollment lecture classes where instructors use audience response devices (clickers) for attendance and lecture engagement. There are several of these courses, and the potential impact is thousands of students. Instructors typically upload/sync scores after each session, and each session is created automatically as an Assignment during the sync, thus triggering notifications for grades. While students can change their notification settings for grade changes, they prefer not to because they want to be able to still receive notifications from their other courses. Yes, they can set up a filter in their email application, but this would require getting the right key words. Many have set up mobile device notifications, as well, where message filtering would not be possible. I imagine that muting assignments would also help in the effort to reduce notification fatigue, but given that it is not a default setting or an available option upon assignment creation (it is a Feature Idea that is being discussed by the product team: ), then helping users have finer-grain control of how they are notified would help our students get the information they need in way that is relevant and constructive.

This is an ongoing request from instructors at our university, especially for those who have teaching teams (often large-enrollment courses) who collaborate when grading assessments. While we do our best to incorporate the step of muting assignments into our trainings, consultations, and other support communications, we're not able to reach everyone, and many instructors still end up with the support burden of students inquiring about why their grades are being changed, why another student's assignment has been graded and not theirs, and a proliferation of notifications resulting from grade changes. Making this option available at the time that instructors are creating the assignment would greatly improve the visibility of the muting function, which would make instructors more aware of the availability of this feature.
