In working with a professor today and showing her the plug-in icon in order to access Panopto, she told me the plug-in icon means “drug dealer” on social media. She then told me her young son died of fentanyl overdose after buying it via social media a few years ago. The icon is such a little thing, but such a huge trigger for people like her! Likewise, I learned recently that the puzzle piece icon has been used by the alt right as an image related to saying how people who are disabled don’t fit in (or something like that). I’m hopeful an “extension” icon could be used instead, similar to this:

@BrídBourke Canvas now has the ability to export groups as a CSV/spreadsheet. Go to People > Groups, select the desired group, select +Import, and select the link to “Download Course Roster CSV.” Apparently, it's a secret! 😁 It's on this page, but it implies this is only to give you a template. It's a populated CSV:

Yes, enabling the rich content editor for SpeedGrader comments would be ideal. Another problem we are seeing with adding URLs to comments is that they sometimes get truncated after saving the comment--making the URL not work even if copy-pasted to a browser. This is so last century!

@admin_bu_carr Yes, that is what I experienced. The only way I could get the group exports to work prior to the term start was to change the term to Default term (temporarily), do the export, then change it back to the appropriate term. If you are unable to make that change, it may require an admin to help.

@admin_bu_carr Yes, I believe so. When I tested it, I had to temporarily change the term to Default, then do the export, and then change the term back. I am an admin so I'm not sure you can do that! Once that magic term date starts, it works fine.

I FIGURED IT OUT! So, in the new class for our winter term, the group CSV download is blank while the course term is set to Winter 21 (that term isn't available to students for another week), but when I change it to Default term the CSV includes the group members. Odd but true. I imagine it will work find after the date at which students can access courses.

Help! What is the key here? The group CSV export works great in a class that I just taught; however, in a new course, with enrollment in place and people assigned to groups--and while on that tab in Groups (yes, I've tried it multiple times)--I still get no data in the export. I tried publishing the course and it still didn't work. Do students need to access the course before it will work? Do the groups need to be attached to an assignment first? Any other ideas?

It's seems like it would be possible to improve the download. It's unusable for most people unless they have advanced spreadsheet skills. I appreciated the work-around and helpful documents shared by @kblack here: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Question-Forum/Attendance-Reports-Are-Not-Clear/m-p/233147 Maybe the developers could read that post and reformat the download! Or, overhaul this tool. Right now, it is just barely useful enough for some to keep using it.

Yes, @adelelep, @RickMoore, etc., I agree! The anonymous checkbox should simply be ELIMINATED. It's sickening that this "lie" of an option has been allowed to linger so long. I wish we could do a cease and desist order! Assuming it is being ignored because of the development of Quizzes.Next.

Now more than ever, we need to be able to export the roster by groups. Faculty are wanting to form groups in Canvas and utilize those same groups in Zoom breakout sessions. We have "single sign on" for Zoom so we can upload a CSV of students to a Zoom meeting and use that to "pre-assign" breakout rooms--rather than having to slowly set that up during class while everyone waits. Anonymous peer review keeps all submitters and reviewers anonymous in SpeedGrader--forcing the instructor to do blind grading, making grading (or giving credit to reviewers via a separate assignment) extraordinarily difficult. This original idea says, "Instructors would know who reviewed whose work." Currently, the Canvas documentation for peer review says, "Instructors and TAs can always view the names of student reviewers in SpeedGrader and on the student submission page." This is not the case. I've submitted this as a bug, but it is appearing as an idea for which you can vote. Please consider doing so!

Our math courses prefer to use the setting, "Restrict students from viewing course after end date" so that students can no longer view information related to posted problem sets. This setting works well, in that the course no longer appears on the student's list of courses and students have no way to access the course. However, the professor--in wanting to test this--tries using the "Student View." It shows the course content in full even after the course end date. Is there a way to improve "Student View" to--in this case--at least say that students do not have access to the course?

I'd be very interested in seeing this addressed. As an instructional designer supporting faculty, I see this issue frequently. A student submits a document, the instructor grades it with the rubric and lengthy comments via the Crocodoc tool, the student resubmits a new version before seeing the instructor's comments, and whalah! The student has no way of seeing all that work the instructor put into giving feedback to the student. I like the idea of the submissions being visible more like a "stream" on the right side rather than via a pull-down which people often don't notice. Also, there must be a way to alert or prevent students from resubmitting work once grading the original submission has commenced.
