How do you audit grades for a course when gradebook history returns no history? Many people using gradebook probably need to audit their grades from time to time, indeed their institute may require it. When you exceed even a fairly modest number of grade entries in a course, gr... |

Sorry, this _still_ seems to be broken, just came across the very old problem in a course that I don't own, cannot upload images again even though this seems to be the actual workaround. Disabling cross-site tracking is not a solution that works in any case I have tested in the last couple of years.
Just wondering whether this problem is going to remain unfixed?
best regards,
Nigel W.

Just found this bug, display was fine in Firefox on Windows PC, fine on Safari/Mac, .... but failed to show the minus when using the Respondus Lockdown Browser. Also discovered the zoom factor workaround, but too late to be useful during actual use.
Using an image instead of the latex/mathjax is not the solution really, we use latex to render mathematics precisely because it improves the accessibility of the material for some students, whereas an image provides no help to them.

Agreed 100%! This was somehow missed from the initial design/requirements, it's not a feature request/enhancement, it's just needed (always was).

Hi @jozsefdavid ,
Thanks a lot for the reply! Agreed, the exact meaning of bug depends on the user, for something based so much on gestures, non-intuitiive behaviour felt like that to me. The swipe up in portrait mode to be honest is more of a nuisance, it is very easy to brush against it and open the grade/comment panel unintentionally, and at least for me it is more convient to actually click to open the required panel to access the comments/grade when needed. If the same could be implemented for portrait mode, this would allow left/right swipe to access the next student. The gestures to move between students without 'Done' action is essential given the large time penalty incurred when reloading all of the students (submitted scanned images of work).
All suggestions very much appreciated - but not being able to use the fraction of the screen in just one of the two orientations seems far from ideal. Reminiscent of using rubric-based marking in Speedgrader on the web interface, a fixed fraction of screen real estate is not under the control of the user.
Being able to resize freely the comment/feedback panel in portrait mode would also help as a partial workround if less work too.
All the best,
Nigel

Hello,
Is there an actual solution to this specific problem, other than brute forcing it by uninstalling the app? Having this same problem at present, Canvas Teacher app on my ipad is 12.73G and rising (well, not actually as it's saturated the storage on the device).
Can Instructure investigate and propose an actual fix rather than this clumsy workaround please? Busy time of the year to be uninstalling apps...
Best regards,
Nigel W.

Is there any chance that the bug with not being able to hide/minimise the coimment/grade/files tabs when in landscape mode in the Teacher App on Ipads? I don't quite see the reason for this design choice, especially when it was fixed for portrait mode but not for landscape.
All the best,
Nigel W.

Hi @rseilham , Seems strange that this has to be considered as 'feature request' rather than a bug fix as - I'm just seeing this for the first time, same as @dpesetsky , it completely defeats the purpose of using landscape mode if we lose 1/3 of the screen width ... so effectively the same physical width as portait mode.
Any chance of a simple bug fix? Feature request timescales for implementation are excruciatingly slow for something like this.
Best regards,
Nigel W.

Hello,
Just wondering if there was any timescale for this being fixed? Current solution is to change browser as the other suggestions do not, only straightforward workaround is to bulk download/reupload older images to the course in question.

I'd not realised that the behaviour of Quiz/Assignment file uploads and timing were as they are until today. This is either a breaking feature or bug, depending on your viewpoint. It cannot be an intentional design feature, presumably an accidental inconsistency arising from bolting together things that were not originally so.
This just make no sense, as @gcrouch and others have pointed out. The use case is:
1. Need to have a students do an assessment under timed conditions (therefore has to be a Canvas Quiz, as assignments don't have timing capability) within a larger time window (time zones and flexbility in general, individual circumstances);
2. Need to have be able to view/annotate submitted work using SpeedGrader, also limit filetype of uploads to .pdf (therefore has to be a Canvas Assignment).
We cannot start downloading work, grading online, and re-uploading... and although there are some creative workarounds involving use of assignments and quizzes in parallel, these are exactly that, not what we should expect students to do under exam-like conditions.
Given this and similar discussions have been going on for quite some time, and that there is a need for this to just work now more than ever, it's a little disappointing that Instructure has not implemented it.
I do understand the feature development workflow, having tried to get another very basic feature implemented (no gradebook history for large courses) a few years ago, and I do appreciated the community input approach to guiding development.
However, for something as basic as fixing a hard-to-understand inconsistency between the way Assignments and Quizzes behave, plus the evident need for such a feature, I think the feature development workflow itself might benefit from some review. For this one, I would hope Instructure might want to lead by reviewing what seems necessary and pragmatic rather than following sheer weight of numbers. Also, it's just too slow to be honest.
At some level, if there are other platforms that are better suited, perhaps the pragmatic approach is not to use Canvas for assignments that need timing?
Best regards
Nigel

Confirming that this does not work, as others have pointed out. Only solution I've found, other than using a different browser (not really a solution, but short- (now medium-) term way to sidestep the problem) is to upload the images again to the course in question, which does make images viewable.

Thanks, it would be good if this could be fixed asap; disabling cross-site tracking is not the ideal solution anyway because that feature cannot be easily controlled per domain, only globally (and also, the cross-site tracking is provided for a good reason). Changing browser is also not ideal as a workaround.

Hi Renee, It may not be specific in a firm timeline, but it sounds a lot more promising than being in product radar where the description of the corresponding timescale for action is indefinite. It will certainly make it much easier to roll out use of Canvas for grading with multiple TAs where we need to show that grades recorded are robust against inadvertent change. Thanks again - I'm excited to hear this is in development!

Is this essential feature ever going to go anywhere? There are lots of brilliant and useful enhancements in the gradebook enhancements, phases I and II, but this lack of gradebook history just where you most need it, is still stuck in 'radar', which could also be renamed 'long grass' or 'graveyard'. If this is below the bottom of the priority list for phase I and II enhancements, I take away the message that requirement to audit course grades is considered less important than some cosmetic/usability features. Product radar does not seem the best resting place for this feature, see e.g. one of many previous discussions https://community.canvaslms.com/message/25666?commentID=25666#comment-25666

This is still just as essential as it ever was, a timescale for implemention would be interesting, without it, you are putting the integrity of your final grades at risk, especially on a long/large course with multiple instructors.

Any update on timescale would be excellent, another session is starting and within a few weeks course gradebooks exceed the 2k changes. Would love to see this feature request going into production! Cheers, Nigel

Very good news, would be a useful addition and reduce likelihood of misentering of grades (not that this removes the idea to have a proper gradebook history).

I have to agree about the advantage of sending email confirmation. Although Canvas generates the email confirmation and records the info. about the upload, if Canvas were to fail student would not receive the email at the time they submitted the work, the student would see this, and then could try to upload again, or tell their instructor about the problem at the time. And while it's true, emails can be faked, doing a convincing job of faking full email headers requires quites some effort. As faculty, I'm also much more in favour of getting the work submitted at any time, but there are issues of fairness to other students who submitted an assignment on time. However, Canvas only has to record accurately when the submission was made, which is the discussion here, it's for instructors to decide once they know when the work was submitted how they handle it, e.g. automatic deductions per day late, etc..

Late in this discussion, but you've identified one of the reasons behind what seems to be a lack of responsiveness to requirements for HE needs. Having a feature request form would make it clear who the end users in need are. Deciding what to implement will depend on the relative size of the two communities and resources available, so prioritisation. Does anyone know (or perhaps someone from Instructure could estimate) on what the relative size of the K-12 vs. HE user bases are at the end of 2015?
