True, removing it would be good...as long as a permanent record remain (out of sight from students) for potential legal purposes. We can't babysit students with everything that they do, especially college students. At this point they are becoming adults. They have the ability to text, email, etc. whether we open the chat feature or not anyway. At some point people have to be held responsible for their own actions. So if they know the class/school/university policies going into the chat room, and they break the rules, the appropriate action needs to be taken immediately (once it has been brought to the appropriate person's attention). I would bet that if all of this is stated clearly up front, you would have very few break the rules and have many that would use the room for the correct reasons, collaboration. Will there be some that use it inappropriately....of course. But those can be dealt with accordingly. This brings up another idea. If someone does use it inappropriately, a "block" feature would be nice. That way they could be blocked from using this feature anymore while attending that particular school.

James, I wouldn't not use it just because you can't control it. Simply make the rules of use crystal clear in writing. Also, make sure that within those rules the students know that a permanent record remains on file indefinitely, and that you can check it whenever you like. This way there is no excuse for posting inappropriate material. As I mentioned before, it is really no different than texting on phones, and we can't control that. If used properly it is a good tool for collaboration as millennials love texting.

It is similar, but mine seems to go a step further. I would like not only the left menu frozen, but the top global and right side course menu as well. They should all stay in sight at all times.

People text all of the time anymore. And that's what the chat function really is, texting. I don't think not using it is the best of ideas. Millenials love to text, so this is a good form of communication for them if it is used correctly. It sparks collaboration, which is needed in an online environment. A permanent record that cannot be edited should be maintained for legal use if need be. But a delete feature for the teacher should be fine as along as that permanent log is kept in tact.

Or, here's a thought, we can have the student figure it out with basic math. They would find out what they need to pass along with sharpening their math skills. Just a thought.

Becky, thanks for the thoughtful solution which, by the way, seems to be a great compromise. But, as you can see from various responses, some would rather stick to their own personal opinion and not consider other compromises at all, even if it would seem to solve the problem at hand. I too have voted no on certain issues, but I would like to think that if a person such as yourself came up with a thought out solution such as this I would recognize that and change my view, or at least consider it. Sure, in this case, the screen would change a bit, but I think that in today's high tech environment individuals would learn how to adapt to that change very quickly, smart phone or not, and move forward with it. But, change always brings resistance from those who don't like it, that is just human nature. So we will just have to wait and see if enough folks out there are willing to support it. If so, great. If not, oh well. We can raise it again another day and see if it gains traction then. Sometimes it depends on when you present an idea in order to get it to fly! Thanks again.

Easy to add for someone that knows code and where to put it. We shouldn't have to add it. Something like this should be an option that Canvas installs. Not all are programmers.

Excellent, and thanks. However, I don't even know where to insert the code.

Well, you have your opinion but I totally disagree. I hate having to continually scroll up just to be able to select another tab for navigation. When you have a long Module page, for example, this gets very frustrating. One should be able to simply click from anywhere on the page. Regarding doing it at the school level, that is not so easy all of the time. And user-by-user only works if you have individuals with IT know how in order to perform the necessary functions. Having Canvas do it permanently, or having them insert a button for those of us that wish to have it freeze, would be the best method. You might want to consider upgrading your resolution to have additional "real estate" if that is a possibility. I know that budgeting won't allow this at times. I think that you are in a minority with this one, I just hope that I get enough votes to move this forward as I think more people would agree with me on this issue than with your stance. Thanks for your comments anyway.

I have suggested this in the past but it didn't seem to gain traction so I thought that I would bring the idea up again. It is just a very annoying feature that could be correct rather easily I would imagine. It would be nice if Canvas froze everything but the interior page. In other words, let's say you are in the "Modules" page. When you scroll down, the way it is now everything scrolls and you lose site of your courses, grades, calendar, etc. as well as all of your global settings. Depending on how long your "Modules" page is, for example, you even lose sight of the left hand navigation tabs as well (Home, Assignments, etc.) I think that those should be stationary, just as if you were to lock columns or rows in Excel.

If you simply upload the syllabus file (.pdf, .docx, etc) to the syllabus page they already have that ability. Simply click on the link and print it out.
