@clong I remember that community far far away and this conversation since it has always generated interest for teachers. In fact, I have all kinds of crazy workarounds when I build courses since many of my assignments were basically clones with differing numbers that corresponded to each Module. Definitely voted UP by me. ~Shauna

erinbreaux we are working on the Public Facing calendar now and mapping out the training offerings for the next 4 weeks. As soon as we can publish that with our registration and scheduling software it will be available! A few things to be aware of moving forward for everyone. The Collaboration and Group Work is considered one of our custom sessions and will not be offered as frequently as the entry level webinars like Support, Admin, and Teachers Fundamentals Training. Starting March 1st all of our Public Sessions will be part of the subscription that schools can purchase. All clients and schools just joining the Canvas family will be using this new system for training. Those who have been with Canvas for a while have several options to participate if they choose to! I would suggest that you speak with your Admin to determine how your institution has chosen to participate. We are very excited with this upgrade - how and when we deliver trainings will make it much more available for everyone using Canvas to attend. Do you have any additional suggestions, feedback or questions? ~Shauna

@nresearcher This isn't exactly the same process as described above, but it does allow you to check up on the health of your Instructors are utilizing Canvas. There was a presentation done this last year at InstrutureCon about a tool that can be integrated with Canvas. @James Thank You so much for sharing! I have many schools asking about how they can get this type of data faster than one student at a time. For those users who are not DataBase Analyzers and have not delved into the intricacies of Canvas Data this will be fantastic. Your instructions and videos are so helpful - Thank You Thank You!

@Beth_Young I agree with your point here regarding the Notes Column. I think the functionality could be improved and have realized multiple times that I am entering notes for the wrong student! Have you considered creating a new Feature Request just for this issue? I wonder if it will be overlooked as your comments in this thread are related to the original request? I recently trained a school that asked about this feature as well. The use case they presented was with Soft and Hard Due dates. All Due Dates are soft in the way their classes run. The Available Until/Hard Date is the Last Day of class and everything can be turned in up until that point in time. The ability to set a default for this field would save them from having to adjust every time they create graded content! ~Shauna

I frequently get questions from teachers asking if there is a way to use Modules to build different "tracks" of learning. My work around in the past has entailed some kind of assessment quiz at the beginning of the material. Based on the score each student earned, I would point them to the correct starting spot in the materials and go through and excuse them from any work they were able to bypass (due to their score). One of the downsides to this approach is that you can't take advantage of the majority of requirement and prerequisite options! I definitely think that the ability for Instructors to have another avenue to develop personalized learning paths for students is highly desirable! ~Shauna

This feature would make the grading so much more practical in the rolling enrollment environment. Grading is always done on an individual basis instead of en masse for each assignment. Although the Individual View of the Gradebook seems the more likely place for this style of grading to be done, that hasn't proven to be the case so far with that functionality. ddrake and @blinford I thought you might want to vote on this one!!

Rewind to 2011... I was part of a very small team trying to simplify the department I was teaching in. We were trying to offer online courses, streamline our grading, and organize our resources into a more paperless format == Canvas Free for Teacher. I am not sure what lucky stars crossed my path the day I jumped into the platform, but it transformed my classroom within a year. In the first six months I spent countless hours reading the Guides, experimenting with features, and making a thousand mistakes. I did come out of the experience feeling like I could successfully navigate in Canvas and start creating courses that I would be proud of. Our school officially adopted Canvas as part of a state-wide purchase later on that made it even better with the extra access to the Admin side. I was so impressed that Instructure was willing to offer this software for teachers freely as part of the larger goal being to improve education with a system that supports students and teachers, and that leads to a better educational experience. Here we are four years later and I still use my Free for Teacher account regularly. Despite having several other official instances, I like to test things out in my FFT account. I can play with tools, integrations, features options, and change course layouts around. I have an alter ego account for myself in which I am enrolled as a student in many of my test courses so I can really try things out and see how user friendly they are for students. Many of the Web 2.0 tools and integrations have been tested out by my demo self before being integrated into a real course so I can be prepared to help my students walk through the necessary steps to be successful. I can look back at more than 150 courses and see how my design has changed over time - hopefully to become more student centered.... Free for Teacher, recommend it to a friend today!
