Not sure if anyone is still looking for a way to do this, but we use a simple PHP script on our web server to generate the certificate. We then added an LTI to Canvas with some custom fields for name, email, course name etc and used the path to the PHP file as the launch URL. Finally we added the LTI at the very end of a course, with the pre-requisite of scoring x% on a quiz (we actually lock all modules this way too so users would have had to score at least 80% on all module quizzes before they get to the final quiz). When the LTI is finally unlocked the certificate is automatically emailed to the user (and a copy to admin for our records).

Hi, I'm in the process of adding outcomes and rubrics at account level but want to make sure I add them correctly in terms of mapping correctly to the curriculum. For example, the unit I'm currently adding is worth 4 points, but it has 5 outcome categories with 11 outcomes in total. Is it best to add a top level category (e.g. unit 1 Health & Safety) a sub level category (e.g. 2. Know about PPE) and then the individual outcomes below that (e.g. 2.1 Select and use correct Personal Protective Equipment)? If this is the best way my next question is how to go about setting the points for each outcome. I was thinking setting each on to 1 point (either meets expectations or not). My problem is this is then 11 points. Would I then set an assignment worth the actual points (4), align all of the relevant outcomes to the assignment and only award the 4 points once all of the outcomes have mastery? I have set up a few like this and it seems like it would work, however I would love the insights or feedback from anyone who is currently using outcomes and how they use them. This is in a UK school btw - my example wasn't the best as the course I'm working on is for Motor Vehicle Studies. Many thanks!

We are running a self-hosted instance of Canvas and its up-to date to the latest stable branch. Whenever I delete a file within Canvas, it is removed from the course but remains on the server. Is this standard functionality or should the file be completely deleted? Is there a job that Canvas can run to remove these files. Any help with this would be really appreciated. I'm worried that we'll be forever increasing our storage if unwanted files aren't deleted. Many thanks!

We have a self hosted instance and this has 2 accounts too. Our servers are on premises and we pulled the source code direct from the Canvas github repo. The Site Admin is as it says, a site admin, used to configure the site itself. The other account is your main instance account used for courses, sub-accounts etc. I'm not sure but I believe in hosted Canvas instances you would not have access to the Site Admin, but your CSM probably would, and when you ask for additional features to be turned on (i.e. International SMS) that are not in your list of feature options, this is probably where they would turn it on for you. I suspect that the similarities in the 2 accounts are where they share the same class, rather than developing new classes just for the site admin account e.g. the ability to add sub-accounts in site admin is pointless, but is probably built in to the class. Anyway, the short answer is I believe this is quite normal for self hosted instances, you just don't see it in the SaaS version. Hope this helps

Hi All, We have setup our Canvas instance to use SAML for auth using our Office 365 credentials. I followed the steps here: Tutorial: Azure Active Directory Integration with Canvas LMS | Microsoft Azure and everything worked flawlessly, first time. Now comes the problem - a lot of our staff are due for Canvas training next month, and will be using the test site. Whenever we try to login to the test site Office 365 can't log us in and returns a 'bad request' error. I presume this is because Office 365 has our main site set as the website to log users in to? Has anyone else come across this problem before, or is there a better way to set up single sign-on that works for all 3 sites? Many thanks in advance for any help or advice!

UPDATE: I have done some more testing and this will not work on quizzes set to show one question at a time. It works well on all questions on the same page though, and even the question list on the right is updated and the question markers and screen reader text still work. I haven't tried this on mobile yet but suspect it should work the same as it is the same page loaded.

For anybody who may be interested, I have developed a small javascript snippet that will allow you to add your own question numbers to quiz questions (useful for grouped questions with different answer types i.e. Question 1(a) multiple choice, Question 1(b) essay). I have copied my code below with instructions on how to use the code. Copy and paste the code into your custom javascript file. Add <p class="custom_name">CUSTOM QUESTION NUMBER HERE</p> to any question (in HTML view) If you are going to use this code, please test it on your test site first and at your own risk.

I am looking for advice on how students could upload their answers within a quiz. The quizzes I have constructed contain different types of questions - some are self marking (multiple choice etc.), some are essay answers and some involve drawing, measuring and plotting. How do your students currently upload their answers that involve drawing? I have thought of a number of ways, from scanning the document in, to photographing using mobile devices. The problem is that not all students have the same hardware available. Also if the quiz was timed it would waste valuable time for them to scan/photograph their work, especially if they have to use multiple devices. Are students able to turn in a paper copy to their instructor, who can then add it to the quiz once it has been submitted? I would be interested to hear how others are getting around this, workflows etc. Any advice would be really appreciated.

It can be toggled on and off from any question, and can be dragged around and rotated into position to overlay an image in order to measure an angle. This is the first of a few tools I wish to implement, others may include plotting graphs and drawing on diagrams. I think the question tools built into Canvas are a little basic, and something like Khan's Perseus would be better - Khan/perseus · GitHub - perhaps as a feature option (for those wanting that extra flexibility).
