Thanks for your reply @rseilham . I've found a solution! But it's not via the theme editor. (Incidentally, I tried adding a custom class with "margin: 0; padding: 0;" to the mobile app CSS file in the theme editor, and using it on the divs, but the margin remained.) The solution was to set the image to "display: block;" What I suspect was happening is that the app adds a margin to the bottom of inline elements (or maybe inline-block elements, or maybe just images - I haven't tested that!) to account for a baseline - so changing to block display sidesteps that rendering idiosyncrasy.

Thanks Ryan - the font isn't really an issue here, it's the margin / padding differences on the image or div. I assume that something in the app (or its HTML rendering) is adding the whitespace, because the images and div already have their margins and padding zeroed. Our admins are very unlikely to add custom CSS to fix one page, alas

Experimenting with Canvas yesterday, I discovered that the Rich Content Editor no longer strips out two HTML5 tags that allow you to easily add captions to images: <figure> and <figcaption> This could be very useful when, for example, adding a copyright notice to an image. However, these tags are not on the Canvas HTML whitelist. Does that mean it's a mistake and the tags may be stripped out in the future? I reached out to Canvas support, and this is what they said: There can be other HTML tags out there that won't be stripped out, <figure> and <figcaption> just being a few. Since they're not on the whitelist, I can't guarantee they won't start being stripped out at some point in the future, but at the same time, it's not something we're going to actively disallow just because it's not whitelisted. So in short, you're free to continue using those tags keeping in mind it could be disallowed in the future. Now, if it were up to me I would greatly expand the whitelist to include a range of HTML5 and CSS3 tags (drop shadows, rounded corners, etc.). But maybe this is something they'll address when they redesign the RCE.

I'm creating an infographic-style page in Canvas and the iOS student app appears to be rendering it differently to browsers (both desktop and mobile browsers). Browser: App: Why is there whitespace at the bottom of the cloud image on the app? I'm not so familiar with the Canvas student app - is this common behaviour? [Incidentally, the page is a combination of stacked divs (with text paragraphs) and images with the colour matching the div background. All of them have 0 margins, which is why this gap is so annoying.]

That is really visually appealing - nice work! Could you achieve the same effect by using divs set at 100% width? That might be friendlier to screen readers than 1x1 tables.

Hey @James , if I remember correctly Canvas uses TinyMCE for their rich text editor. Is this deprecated table code coming from that, and are TinyMCE bug reports like this one describing the same issue? Great questions, and a great summary - thank you laurakgibbs. This back-end change has a huge amount of front-end impact - and a timeline, change process, and institutional plan will save a lot of grief (and support calls!) further down the road.

I'm not certain, but the problem probably comes from the fact that you're declaring the border's size using the HTML attribute, but its colour from the style attribute. Effectively, it is interpreting that colour declaration as a separate border, and then it tries to collapse the two borders into one multicoloured mishmash. If you change your code to this, the border becomes one uniform colour: <table style="border: 5px solid #009c9c; height:174px;" width="100%">

I could be wrong, but it seems that MasteryPaths only differentiates on the basis of student performance (i.e. assignment results) and not on the basis of section, group, student path choice, or other factors. So I'm not sure how it has potential for this idea, differentiated pages, or differentiated modules.

Hi Tara, the way to do this is with HTML anchors, as described in Stefanie's link above. You do need to go into the HTML editor, though. First, add the code in bold inside the header that you want to be the "destination": <h2 id="UniqueIdentifier">Header title</h2> The ID you add here must be unique to that header, so you will need a different one for each destination. Second, you can create the link that will jump to the destination by adding this bolded code: <a href="#UniqueIdentifier">This link</a> will scroll the page to the appropriate header title The ID you add here must have a hash symbol before it, and it must match the ID you chose for that header. This is only a good idea on long long pages; and usually it's a better idea to split the page up into separate sub-pages if that is possible.

It looks like the latest production release has moved the buttons on the People page to a drop-down menu: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-6857#jive_content_id_People This prevents the "Access Report Data" button from displaying. A way to add space / margins / padding around image elements would be ideal for non-CSS-literate (read, most) users. I've seen several lecturers add images, left or right align them with the RTE, and then have the wrapping text bump up against the image:
