Hi Dearne: Two years ago we did what you have described with some success, but there a few pain points. If students are using the app, going from a course into which they are enrolled into a linked course would display the linked course as though it were a browser page rather than one displayed through the Canvas app. There are also issues with files and how they are accessed by students. They make the assumption that when clicking on Files in the enrolled course, they will able to see all files, even though a file may reside on the linked course. It gets messy... It's also not possible to link a file from a linked course into an enrolled course. Blueprint is a better option in that it puts the content into the enrolled course rather than linking to it.

+1. I was hoping that Teacher app would replace my current downloading, annotating and uploading student work grading workflow, but having to drill down to specific assignments to see what is pending takes time. On the browser version I can simply look at the To Do list, or even better, bookmark the Speedgrader URL for an assignment, which takes me to it straight away. In the app, I have to navigate to the assignment.

What happens this scenario? 1. I associate a course with a Blueprint course 2. I sync over non-locked items 3. a teacher decides to modify an unlocked item in their course (i.e. the title of an assignment) 4. a change is made to the assignment and the Blueprint course synced Does the teacher receive a new version of the assignment, or is the original one written over?

In order to get some insight into Blueprint and associated courses, I did a few tests to clarify behaviour in certain scenarios (some of the statements in the release notes are a little general): 1) Are grades overridden for an assignment if the corresponding assignment is changed in a Blueprint course? - Assignment created in Blueprint course - everything locked but for Due Date, Availability Dates - Course associated and synced - Marks added for assignment in associated course - Course title changed in Blueprint course Result: title is changed in associated course with marks unaffected 2) Are unlocked objects in a Blueprint course totally unlinked in the associated course after the initial sync? - Used the assignment tested in 1). Assignment changed to unlocked in the Blueprint course - Title changed for the assignment in the Blueprint course - Blueprint course synced Result: titled change is reflected in the associated course with marks unaffected. Was not expecting to see the change in the associated course's assignment as the assignment was unlocked... Tried this: - Assignment title changed in both the associated course and the Blueprint course Result: no changes were made to the assignment in the associated course. It would be safe to assume that as soon as a change is made in an unlocked assignment in an associated course, the link between it and the assignment in the Blueprint course is broken. Prior to that however, the link remains, despite the unlocked status. If the assignment is relocked in the Blueprint course, the assignment in the associated course is overwritten with the Blueprint course assignment.

I would like to see the ability to lock all parts of an assessment, such as grade type and, in particular, rubrics. We are using rubrics to measure outcome scores across assignments, so it would be detrimental if a teacher was to delete a rubric from an assignment.

I'm not actually seeing anything other than crocodoc when viewing an assignment submission in beta. To make sure it wasn't to do with a previous assignment submission, I masqueraded as a student and submitted a file. Viewing this file still presented me with crocodoc. Does something need to be activated on my end? Nothing indicated such in our institution admin settings...? Response from Erin Hallmark @ Sam Denniston on Jun 4, 2017 6:56 PM Hi, Sam, I know a handful of accounts had some caching concerns; please submit a support ticket so our support team can alert our engineers and take a look. Thanks! Erin

I avoid Conversations for contacting parents (Observers) as, in addition to other frustrations, there is no way to differentiate which parents are associated with which child if the surname is the same.

This got 280 votes. I'm unsure as to why the rationale for it even needs to be discussed. Only 10 calendars showing at any one time makes the calendar useless for students who are enrolled in more than 10 courses (all the students at our institution). The "uncluttered" calendar view argument doesn't hold any weight - a calendar isn't meant to be neat and tidy. The API only returns events from 10 calendars, so it is clearly a limitation with Canvas. This should be fixed asap.

Allow the option to email instead of Conversations. A simple checkbox next to the names and details in "People" within a course, which then opens the default email program, would be very easy to implement. None of my staff have said anything positive about Conversations. Specifically their complaints are a) confusion on how the system works, with multiple channels and devices giving different experiences, b) having to manage two Inboxes - Conversations and internal email (student complaints are the same), c) it's not as functional as email. My trying to defend the system with the "streamlined messaging system" argument doesn't cut it. All would be resolved if there were a simple way to email from a predefined list in a Canvas course.

Pretty unusable at this stage. I added myself as a student to a course (no way I am going to test it on a real assignment!), created an assignment with a pdf attachment, opened the pdf in the Canvas iPad app, added some text, then hit Submit Assignment. Said it was successful, but no submission in grade book or speed grader. Also, no ability to move an image around once it has been embedded into the document. I added one in and it layered over the document text; however, i had no way of moving it away from the text to the blank portion of the document. Ticket submitted.

This update is very helpful, but how does one change the Help to something else? As I will be putting non-help links in there, I don’t want the title of the menu to be misleading. Cheers

Relevant information on the second line is much better in my opinion - it ties the information to the item much more tightly. As Randy stated, the ability to wrap is the key rather than using the space that is currently taken up by the relevant information. Wrapping with no limits makes text headers more meaningful and would shift the modules space from what is now essentially a work unit index.

It is two months short of a year since this bug was identified; we have yet to hear of what progress is being made. Could we have an update? This is affecting how courses are designed - I am instructing teachers to avoid putting instructions through module headers (the preferred way) and use a page instead, which is not preferred, as it separates the instruction from the instructional (module) items.

This needs to be implemented asap. In the case of a parent as an observer, there are privacy issues around them being able to see other students' posts. In this case the ability to see a discussion should be restricted for parents. They shouldn't, however, be prevented from seeing announcements! I'm scratching my head as to why the two are in the same category - they are clearly different things. I shall add it to the 'Canvas Quirks' list of mine!

I'm trying to articulate to my staff the reason why students can indefinitely resubmit, and have been doing so, even after their work has been graded. We are talking junior secondary here. I can't find a rationale for the feature anywhere apart from the statement in the guides that "students can always resubmit". Nine times out of ten in K12, the situation does not call for a student to resubmit after having been graded, yet this is the behaviour in Canvas Could someone one who has experienced the same perhaps provide something for me...?

Why is the status for this archived? As a K-12 school, I want to avoid confusing students as much as possible. If I don't want students to submit more than one version of an assignment, give me the option to indicate this when setting up the assignment. What happens if I grade a student's work prior to the due date or availability date? What if he thinks he can resubmit the assignment after it has been graded, and does, because there is a glaring blue box telling him he can resubmit? This behaviour doesn't make sense. If a piece of work has been graded, why should the student have the ability to resubmit? The messages being sent to them are confusing.

This shouldn't be a feature request - sounds like basic functionality to me! Voted anyway. Sigh - love Canvas but devil is in the detail sometimes...

Indeed - I don't think this should be viewed as a feature, but a user interface bug. I have teachers using Canvas for the first time and are somewhat disappointed that they can't use text headers in a module as an instructional item due to the excessive truncation. Creating a whole new page for the instruction sends students away from the modules area and leads to an already congested page index for them.

I have created a workaround by creating a course called "Shared xxxx". I set the course settings to allow authenticated users to see the course. I give teachers the url of the course, and they add a link using redirect LTI to their course navigation. Anything they want to share goes into the shared course. Anything they want for their course only goes into their course. Works well, as long as it's obvious which course they are in at any time.
