Since SpeedGrader does not show previews of uploaded images in a quiz when instructors are grading, we use the essay question type and ask students to embed an image. This way, they see a preview when they are working on the quiz, and instructors can see the image when grading without having to leave SpeedGrader. The issue is that this embedded image is a link and not a file itself. So if a student submits their quiz and then deletes the image, an instructor cannot see their work. Further, it doesn't seem that anything would prevent a student from changing their image after submitting the quiz, so they would be able to change their answer. When grading, there is even a message that states this when hovering over the image: "This is an image, not text, and could have changed since the student submitted." I would like a file embed to behave like a file upload in that the quiz contains a copy of the image which cannot be removed or changed by the student.

My experience with SpeedGrader (as an instructor) is that moving from one student to the next is EXTREMELY slow. I am often grading 300+ quizzes at a time and grading by question to maintain consistency. Each time I grade a question it can take 4-5 seconds for the page to update after clicking the "Update" button to save the score changes and another 7-8 seconds to load when I click to the next student. This 11-13 seconds adds up to an hour of wasted time if I am grading 300 quizzes---and that is 1 hour per question. Generally I have to grade more than one question, so this is multiple hours wasted. And this doesn't account for the time spent scrolling up and down the page just to get to the "Update" button.
I wonder if it would be possible to have the browser download or cache the files for the next 5 or so students in the grading order each time a student's page is entered so that the page for the next student is being prepared while I am working on grading the current student.

I agree that it should be in both places. For those looking for a workaround, check out the canvancement browser extension: https://github.com/jamesjonesmath/canvancement/tree/master/quizzes/quizwiz

I agree, and I have not seen this feature even on the web version (with grading quizzes).

I agree. I have opted to just print essays and grade them by hand rather than use SpeedGrader, and this is one of the big reasons. I also dislike that when writing a comment by hand, multiple strokes are considered part of a single annotation and there is not option to undo a single stroke. This is very different behavior from any other drawing software I have ever used.

I would like to second the opinion of paulbui. If accessibility is a higher priority, can there at least be a global option in a users account so that they can prioritize efficiency over accessibility across all of Canvas?

SIMPLE WORKAROUND: If students download the Canvas app to their mobile device, go to "files" in the app, then they can upload a new photo using the camera. Since this image is taken within the app, it will upload a .jpg image directly to the student's Canvas files even if using an Apple device. The other benefit is that no manual uploading process is needed since the file is immediately in their Canvas accounts. One issue that I have seen is that some students will have most of their space taken up and get an error message. They then have to remove some files first. HOWEVER: I agree that Canvas should fix this issue so that teachers and students are not wasting hours of their time to try to find and explain how to use these workarounds.

I agree that the speedgrader is very difficult to use in a way that provides speed. At my institution, we have written some exams in Canvas (especially in the times of COVID-19 when we don't have the option of in-person exams). The workflow for us is that each instructor in a multi-section course will grade one or two problems across all sections to maintain consistency in grading. So sometimes we are grading 300+ quizzes at a time and speedgrader takes a long time. In particular, we have to either click the update button or press the enter key after entering a score. At this point there is something happening on the front end of Canvas that causes a page refresh taking a few seconds before allowing us to move onto the next student. A couple of seconds may not sound like much, but it adds up over hundreds of quizzes. It would be great if we could move on to the next student IMMEDIATELY after clicking update or clicking enter. I would also like to see the shortcut keys be customizable. I would also love to see speedgrader incorporate some of the features of the Gradescope software which in my experience works like a gem. In my opinion, the most powerful feature of Gradescope is being able to see all submissions for a certain question at a glance and being able to group them so that common mistakes can all be dealt with at once by applying a single grade and detailed feedback comment. In the experience of most of the instructors in my department this can cut grading time in half for many problems. (6-8 hours of grading down to 3-4 hours).

There are a lot of features in Canvas that I don't know how to use or don't know are available. It would be great if every page had a "?" or "help" button that would give some quick information and help links for functionalities on that page.
For example, I have been using Canvas for 2+ years and only recently learned from someone else that the blue and red coloring in the gradebook indicate if an assignment is missing or late and why sometimes the "not-graded" icon would show up. Similarly, I only learned today that there are different ways to view the gradebook.
If the "?" icon was on every page, then on the gradebook page, clicking it might produce a popup displaying something like the following:
