I went through the circuitous import-course procedure to duplicate a rubric. I subsequently re-named the imported/duplicated rubric, and changed the scores in that rubric. But then I tried to re-import the original rubric, and it over-wrote the previous duplicated rubric. Is there any way around this?

I don't have an immediate answer for you, but I also allow my students to do multiple re-takes (formative assessments). The key is to give them a new problem each time based on simulated data. The exams package in R lets you do this. It takes a bit of learning, but I've found it's worth it in the end.
