I'm working on some custom CSS for my Canvas sub-account's theme and had a question for the community: is there a way to use the Instructure-UI icon font with a ::before or ::after pseudo-element and the 'content' CSS property? I see directions for adding Instructure-UI icons in React apps, but nothing that would work with custom CSS in Canvas -- or in a tag on a Canvas content page for that matter. Thanks! ... View more

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas When a student submits a Classic Quiz that is a mix of auto-graded and manually graded question types, that quiz appears in gradebook with the "needs grading" icon. With a New Quiz, a score for just the auto-graded questions appears in gradebook with no obvious indication that the quiz needs manual attention. The New Quizzes behavior is confusing. And especially in large courses with multiple graders, it leads to grading errors. Instructors and teaching assistants have observed that with New Quizzes, they have to guess which quizzes need additional attention based on the score displayed. And students have repeatedly inquired to find out why their quiz scores have not been updated to reflect their work. Please fix this behavior. New Quizzes need to unambiguously indicate in gradebook when they need additional attention from a grader. Anything less makes New Quizzes unusable for a very common use case. ... View more

In classic quizzes, the multiple answer question type allows instructors to preload student feedback for every answer choice, just like with ordinary multiple choice questions. That feature has been eliminated in New Quizzes in favor of summative student feedback for a correct answer, for an incorrect answer, and in general. I would like to propose that New Quizzes bring back student feedback per answer choice for multiple answer questions. There are a few of advantages to this: Currently, if you've selected partial match with penalty grading, it's unclear what feedback students will get on multiple answer questions. This would make the question type behavior easier for instructors to intuit. Specific feedback on each answer choice advances student learning by helping students gain a granular understanding of what they got right and wrong, and potentially where to find remedial resources. Many instructors (including in my program) have deep question banks that have already been developed to include student feedback for each answer choice. Having student feedback for every answer choice would, presumably, make it easier to preserve preloaded student feedback when importing questions from classic quizzes. Existing Canvas activities like, for example, continuing education courses, may have a requirement that students receive feedback for each answer choice. For my program -- and I am sure I'm not alone -- the current functionality is likely to delay our implementation of new quizzes while we figure out what to do next.
