1. Amen Brother or Sister. I have seen ideas languish 5, 6, even 7 years while their authors are being thanked for their input, appreciated for their contribution to the CANVAS community, and assured that their ideas are invaluable to the growth of CANVAS. Can we all spell D I S I N G E N U O U S? On the other hand, there may be some movement on something I have been complaining about forever - loss of feedback in SpreedGrader without warning. While I hesitate to mention it (there are still 36 hours left), for the first time since I began using CANVAS I may actually have made it through the entire quarter without losing too much of my work. (Sorry, I had to leave for a second there to find wood to knock on...) To me, this means that they've actually begun to do something about this issue (as opposed to increased operator proficiency, which we can never assume in my case). There are some new warnings that I find really helpful, but I hope they aren't finished because there are still glitches. and I want to experience at least one quarter of 0 feedback loss in my teaching career. 2. Half-baked or not, thanks for the workaround for ss who do not submit their oeuvre into CANVAS themselves! I've bookmarked it for the inevitable next time this happens to me. Cheers and Happy Holidays to All

OMG, are you listening to us at all, CANVAS Developers????? Certainly 5 years of discussion are enough to convince you that we need AT LEAST
formatting
graphics
live links
in our Speedgrader comments.
Giving us a forum to suggest changes/features and then ignoring what is being said wastes our time, if not yours.

PS I'm afraid to mention this for fear that it will then disappear, but here goes. Colleagues who aren't emoji adverse and are using Windows: You CAN insert emojis (and special characters, math symbols, and some other stuff) into your Speedgrader comments (and other places in CANVAS) by pressing the Windows key and tapping period (.) key.
In fact, you can use this key combination almost everywhere (not just in CANVAS). It's not live links, text formatting, or any of the other things we want, but it's something. 🔸 Don't tell anybody... 🔸
iOS/Apple folks can do something similar, I'm sure.

This has been under discussion since 2015 and still no action on it??? Placating us by giving us a place to "discuss" things and then ignoring what we've taken the time to share our ideas is the definition of disingenuousness. I would love to chat with the person that suckered my university into buying this LMS. It's a good thing we don't teach the way you all do business. University of Washington

Keep waiting, t_madarasz. I've been using CANVAS for 3 years and in those years have never seen anything change based on user feedback. Perhaps they're hoping we'll all retire or die? 🤬 Chérie

No, Richard, they don't. They don't take any notice at all. I've been using CANVAS for 3 years and HATE most of it, but when a university the size of ours gets suckered into buying something, you use it. 🤬 Chérie

[BEFORE BEGINNING, LET ME POINT OUT THAT I AM ❇️ NOT A NEW USER ❇️ , SO DO NOT EVEN THINK OF DISMISSING THIS COMMENT FOR THAT REASON.]
I AM FURIOUS!!! I HAVE ONCE AGAIN LOST 90 MINUTES OF MY LIFE TO CANVAS. WHEN ARE YOU (CANVAS) GOING TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE OF LOST COMMENTS/FEEDBACK ON STUDENT WORK? WE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS TOPIC FOR AT LEAST 4 YEARS AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, YET WHENEVER WE OPEN A NEW THREAD ON THE TOPIC, COMMENTS FOME FLYING IN, WHEN YOU TIRE OF IT A RANDOM COMMENT IS MARKED AS A SOLUTION, AND THE THREAD IS CLOSED. ( IN FACT, ONE TIME THE MARKED "SOLUTION" WAS ACTUALLY ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT THE LACK OF ANY KIND OF AUTO-SAVE. <INSERT BITTER LAUGH HERE.>) ]
I AM OH SO TIRED OF COPYING AND PASTING EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE OF WHAT I TYPE IN CANVAS INTO WORD JUST IN CASE MY WORK MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARS. (OBVIOUSLY I'M TIRED OF THAT. OTHERWISE, I WOULD HAVE DONE SO FOR THE PIECE I LOST TODAY AND SAVED MYSELF A LOT OF GRIEF.)
THANK YOU FOR DESTROYING ANOTHER WEEKEND. THANK YOU FOR ADDING JUST A TEENSY BIT OF THAT JE NE SAIS QUOI TO AN ALREADY STRESSFUL FINALS WEEK. THANK YOU FOR NOT GIVING A RAT'S A__ __ ABOUT YOUR USERS.
FIX THIS ISSUE.
I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CHARGED MY UNIVERSITY FOR THIS....THIS...FLMS, BUT I DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR ENERGY TO FIND OUT. THANKS TO CANVAS.

"We" are nowhere because INSTRUCTURE doesn't really seem to give a rat's a$$ what users (as opposed to purchasers) need or want.
Sorry to be so blunt, but I've just spent the better part of an evening (AGAIN) trying to figure out how to do something that 1980s word processors could do, but CANVAS can't. And, just like we (users) have discussed this saving issue, we have also discussed the formatting issue I'm trying to solve 🔴 to death 🔴 on various CANVAS forums.
In conclusion, don't hold your breath. And don't spend hours, days, and weeks of your life like I have trying to find solutions that don't exist.

@BryanSarauer @barbmurck (just in case you need a giggle)
The reason Canvas doesn't have an answer key function because they aren't listening to us. It's the same reason CANVAS messages and assignment comments, scores, etc don't save in the background. These two apparently unsolvable oversights mean that you can't easily create the content you want, nor can you easily protect the content you have created. This painful truth was made apparent to me once again today as I lost an hour of comments, grades, etc. I had written for final papers I was reading. (More about those below.) As a side note: these papers were a large part of the students 'final course grades, which were due yesterday. The being-due-yesterday part is probably not the result of CANVAS lacking functionality teachers have been asking for for years, but it sure didn't help.
So, why have I waited until now to respond? (not in order of importance)
1. I have 18 10-15 page freshman final papers to read and have finally run out of, ...well..., everything. (Candy, alcohol, laundry I HAVE TO do RIGHT NOW, YouTube Karen videos, etc.) Sending responses to 2-month-old messages about years-old problems that haven't been attended to sounded about right.
2. I fully anticipate losing more feedback and grades as the night goes on. This, despite the fact that I actually copy and past my CANVAS feedback and grades into WORD every few minutes. I STILL lose work, even with this workaround.
3. Your message of 3-1-2021 contains a very important phrase that I have been wanting to thank you for.
Every question has a key.
I suspect that you may have meant it much more pragmatically than I'm taking it, but still I thank you for the inspiration. I've decided I'm going to get a tat of that on my face/hand/arm (or maybe all three) over the summer and wanted to thank you for the quote*. I've started saying it to my students in a very mysterious voice when I can't figure out an answer to their questions. Sometimes I even change it up to "A key every question has." just to keep them guessing.
Thanks so much for the inspiration and for adding to the "closed" conversation on answer keys,
Cherie
*Please excuse me for not citing my source. on my tat. Each letter adds to the cost. Plus, it hurts.
@barbmurck YOU have a great summer, my friend. I'm sure all of our CANVAS problems will be solved when we return in the fall. Yes, I am.

Q: Can I recover partially composed Canvas messages that I lost?
A: No.
🤯🤯🤯
Situation: While I was crafting a long message to my instructor, I accidentally hit the escape key. Whoosh—Just like that, the last 30 minutes of my day just vanishes.
➡➡When this happens, is my writing gone with the wind. ⬅⬅
➡➡Is there some kind of drafts box I don't know about?⬅⬅
Th is has happened to me a few times.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@lenz , instructor
This has happened to me A L 😭 T!
PROBLEM: Partially composed CANVAS message lost because I hit escape or did something else equally ridiculous.
NEEDED: 1) Ability to save an incomplete CANVAS message (preferably auto-save such as just happened to this very message. - See bolded message under text entry screen in the screenshot below.)
2) A Drafts folder (a la Outlook) for partially complete CANVAS messages to reside until they are either finished & sent OR deleted by user.
3) A warning that I am leaving page and will lose my message. (See message at top of screenshot below).--------------------------------------------------------------------⬇
Thanks for considering this. Between this issue and forgetting to manually save feedback given in SpeedGrader rubrics, I lose at least 1 hour of my life EVERY DAY. 😭 😤 🔪

@barbmurck
I saw that too, just before my head exploded. 😵 I honestly don't know what else to do to get their attention. If I had time, I would start a whole new thread using thesaurus synonyms for answer key just to see if we could get a human's attention.
I did fall into the rabbit hole for a minute and start looking at something called "Tracker" or "Mastery Tracker" or something like that. Do you know what that is? I have no idea, but I don't think it's part of the CANVAS that we use here at the UW. I skimmed it too fast but wondered if it might somehow magically apply to your situation
Have a great weekend and congratulations on your "solution!"

Thanks for this!!! 😅 I had stumbled upon something similar, but your suggestion is easier (and faster).'
This is a related but very basic question about quizzes. How can I see the editing screen where each question and answer resides? I don't make the quizzes, so I don't know where .... actually, I don't know ANYTHING about quiz creation, but I'd really like to see actual editing screens. (Just a link to creating quiz-question answers would be great. I've checked all the links I got as a result of my searches and got lots about creating questions. Not so much about creating answers.)
Thanks

Are any CANVAS people actually watching/reading these posts? If so, please explain how @barbmurck 's addition to @cyoung12 's question is a solution??! It's clearly an additional cry in the CANVAS support forest for information about ANSWER KEYS. Information that I would like to have as well.
ANSWER KEYS. We want'em. We need'em. Where are they and how can we make them work for us? PLEASE. Throw us some scraps. Links to appropriate help files would ...well... help. I have searched - repeatedly - but come up with nothing for the topic ANSWER KEYS.
Or should we come to the astonishing conclusion that there is n o t h i n g in the vast CANVAS help storehouse on this topic?
Please. Help.

AMEN!!! I have just lost 45 minutes of work AGAIN!!!! It seems totally random. Save, don't save, submit, don't submit, don't leave the window, whatever. It doesn't seem to matter. If CANVAS doesn't want you to have it, you won't have it. This is infuriating!!! Is anyone actually monitoring these conversations? While trying to find a way to locate my lost comments, I have stumbled upon several threads like this - dating all the way back to at least 💥 💥 2017!!!!! 💥 💥 Is anybody listening to us??? Or are we just talking to ourselves??? I will now return to my student's paper and try to reconstruct what I THOUGHT I was telling her about her work. It's truly 🔹 pathetic 🔹 that I have to spend more time trying to get my comments to my students than they spent on actually producing the writing. Speaking of pathetic, here's a pathetic tip: Have a WORD file open at all times and periodically copy your comments into it. It's ugly, but at least you'll have something to work with when reconstructing all that CANVAS has lost for you. Naturally, at 1:30AM on Thanksgiving weekend, for the first time in a long time, I neglected to follow my own advice. Stupid me.

I am SO SICK of working on a student paper for 30 mins. or so and then LOSING all my comments AND scores I have tried EVERYTHING to avoid this and am now at the point where I actually copy and past every few minutes into WORD so that I'll have some (messed up but usable) vestige of my work. Just when I think I figured out what the h@## CANVAS is doing with my comments and how I can save them (you know, in case I need to check something on another site, go to the bathroom, copy and paste into WORD), I lose my work in yet another new and infuriating way. As has happened just now. I have been using computers for 30 years and have NEVER - even in the days of crappy connectors, sketchy power supplies, and DOS - NEVER lost as much work and time as I have on CANVAS. For all its cool features, this aspect of CANVAS completely sucks.
