Hi @Robbie_Grant , no I didn't find an answer to this but ended up making sure that each course's sections were different to others in case something should change in the future.

I meant global filters as in the filters in GA which prevent traffic from your own IP address being counted in the data, so if you're a web developer for example, your own employees don't affect the stats by doing their day to day work etc. If you're seeing nothing at all this is an unlikely issue especially if you allow off-site visitation to Canvas, but if there's a filter there that excludes your own IP address, you won't see your own visits showing up in real time or any other data.

- Check there's no global filter excluding any IP addresses you're trying to visit - Put the GA code at the top of your javascript file, before anything else except comments. Both made a difference to me, and I've got it running in about an hour.

Yeah I misread something - I thought it was the CSV export that truncated the errors and not the UI view after the import had taken place. Still, the extra step of having to download and open the errors if the errors are greater than 50 seems to be a backward step. I'd rather have the option of downloading all the errors as well as seeing all the errors in the UI. I can normally figure out the problem from a few errors as well but it's solving a problem that didn't exist.

Pretty solid release overall. The ability to duplicate pages and assignments etc is a much-needed addition. One question though - why does the SIS importer CSV report truncate at 50 errors? Why not just dump the entire error list?

Awesome. So why am I not seeing the Google Drive button on the sidebar, or the Google Drive icon in the Rich Content Editor, or the Google Drive icon in the assignment file upload area? Do I need to turn something else on?

Ok, so the technical jargon is right at the ceiling of my abilities with this stuff. At the school I administer, we use Google as the primary login option and Google Apps extensively. Everyone clicks the Login with Google button on the login page (we also have this enabled on the mobile app thanks to our clever CSM) and they can login that way. So, if I understand correctly, if I enable the Google LTI for my school, no one can login with Google any more as I'm assuming the Google authentication option and the LTI cannot run alongside each other. Instead we will have to revert to the standard Canvas login functionality, but we then get all the cool new Google integration with the LTI. Is that correct?

Version 2 adds a definition for 'Instance' and tweaks the definition for 'Help' to cater for its new placement in the Global Navigation menu. Thanks to Deactivated user for his suggestion to add a definition for 'Instance'.

It's great to be able to add images to course tiles, however even though you say there's an optimum resolution for images to be used, it doesn't appear as if the images get compressed or resized at all when I inspected the code in my browser. I know there's going to be some dumb staff member(s) in my school who upload an image a few MB in size and massive resolution, and loading times for those images is unnecessary use of data. Could a warning near the image upload area specify an optimum resolution and/or file size, or can a file size cap on the image upload be implemented to stop this happening? It's commonplace on many websites to do this when images are being used in thumbnail scenarios.

Hi everyone, I'm a relatively new Canvas admin for a primary school in New Zealand. I have to have Canvas up and running by February 2016 and I've got a rather interesting problem. As our student database doesn't have an API I'm left with using the CSV function to create users and place them in courses. I've got this pretty well set up so it's as easy as saving a CSV export from the student database to a directory on my computer and Excel files looking for the CSV files in that directory automatically generate all the users and courses etc. I then upload the CSVs of those Excel files and Canvas is set to go. A few weeks ago I was adding sections to the specialist courses I had set up. The way we've opted to set things up here is for specialist courses (those courses such as cooking, art, science, drama, music) to have all the school students enrolled in one course but have the students split into sections for grading purposes etc. Before I created the specialist courses, all students were added to a home class course (Year 1, Year 2, etc etc) and in that course I added them to a section because there are sometimes multiple Year 1, Year 2 etc courses. The end result might be a Year 5 course containing all Year 5 students, with sections 5A, 5B etc to allow teachers to grade their own students while keeping all course material in one place. All students in the school are added to all the specialist courses, and added to their own section within those courses. So the end result is a Music course with all students enrolled with many sections such as 1A, 2A, 2B, etc etc, 5A, 5B etc etc. What I didn't realize is that those specialist course sections shared the same name and SIS ID as the sections in the home Year 1 - Year 8 courses. The result from that was all the students were then automatically enrolled into their sections in the specialist courses, meaning I didn't have to do anything. However after discussing this with our Canvas team helping us with the rollout, they weren't sure whether this was a good or bad idea as they'd never heard of this being possible let alone being done before. It was a complete accident that I came across this and none of the documentation suggests this could be done or is a good idea. So I'm asking you whether it is a good idea to have many courses sharing the same sections and corresponding SISIDs. Is it going to come back to bite me or anyone else in the future by doing this? It's not too late to change, but if it doesn't affect anything then it would save me a lot of work when adding a single new student to the system and having to manually place them in the correct specialist course sections, when I can just enroll them in their home course and section, and enroll them in the specialist course only, with the section within those courses then taking care of themselves. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Another option would be to have an iPad/mobile emulator of sorts running on the desktop browser as a popup window which would mean you could do some rough testing even if you didn't have a device handy

Thanks @kona , our old LMS didn't have anywhere near the level of functionality Canvas has so a comparison sheet wouldn't do us any good!

Below is a simplified glossary for many important terms used in Canvas, along with the relevant links in the Canvas Guides. Wording is taken from the Canvas Guides and Where can I find a list of Canvas terminology? along with some of my own. This is available as a page in the 'Getting Started with Canvas' course, available on Commons. Activity Stream The Activity Stream displays all recent activity in Canvas. There are two types of Activity Streams in Canvas: Global and Course. The Global Activity Stream is part of the Dashboard and shows recent activity for all courses. The Course Activity Stream is part of a Course Home Page and shows recent activity for a specific course. More information on the Activity Stream. Announcements Announcements is a communication tool that allows instructors to post announcements for all users in a course. Announcements can be created in courses and groups. Canvas admins can also make announcements for an entire Canvas account. Instructors can allow students to reply to announcements. More information on Announcements. Assignments An assignment is any activity assessment that is created by the instructor. Assignments can include Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes. Some assignments are submitted for no grade. Other assignments may be submitted offline by tracked in the Canvas Gradebook or be submitted online. More information on Assignments. Calendar The Calendar is a communication tool that shows users all events and assignments in their courses and groups all in one place. You can export a calendar feed for use on other calendar applications. More information on the Calendar. Canvas Community The Canvas Community is an external resource provided by Canvas for all Canvas customers. The Canvas Community includes the Canvas Guides, which provides all Canvas documentation and videos, Canvas Feature Ideas, community groups, and more. Go to the Community. Courses Courses are units of instruction in one subject that typically last one term. Courses can be created by Canvas admins or instructors. Users are typically enrolled in a course as a user or a teacher. Click the Courses button in the left sidebar to see your courses. Course Home Page The Course Home Page is the first page that students see in a course. The Course Home Page can be customized to display content based on an instructor's preference. Learn how to change your course home page. Course Navigation Course Navigation is a menu on the left side of a Canvas course. Course Navigation consists of navigation links directed to all the feature areas within a course. Instructors can customize Course Navigation for each course. More information on course navigation. Dashboard The Dashboard is a panel of content that acts as the Canvas default landing page and provides an overview of all Canvas activity for a user. The Dashboard shows all courses and groups, recent activity, to-do items, upcoming assignments, and recent feedback. It's typically the first screen you see when your first log in to Canvas. Click the Dashboard button on the left sidebar to go to your dashboard More information on the Dashboard. Discussions Discussions is a forum designed to facilitiate informal communication between students in a course. Discussions can also be created as assignments for grading purposes. Students can also respond to informal and graded discussions in the context of a group. All Discussions content is public, and all course students can view and reply to a discussion. More information on Discussions. ePortfolios ePortfolios allow students to showcase their best work to colleagues and prospective employers. They also make it possible for students to create light-weight websites or presentations. More information on ePortfolios. Files Files are where you upload course files, syllabi, readings, or other documents. As an instructor, you can lock the folders so students cannot access your files. Files can be placed in Modules, Assignments, or Pages. Files and folders are put in alphabetical order and cannot be rearranged. Canvas provides a file repository for each user, group, and course. Files can be public or private. You can add files to your course and share them with your students to access and use during the course. /courses/1/modules/32More information on files. Global Navigation Global Navigation is the menu that appears on every Canvas page. Global Navigation consists of navigation links that direct users to frequently-used features in Canvas. A big part of Canvas's Global Navigation is the sidebar on every page. More information on Global Navigation. Gradebook The Gradebook stores information about student progress in Canvas. Canvas includes two types of gradebooks: a standard gradebook that provides a collection of numerical or letter-grade assessments, and a Learning Mastery Gradebook that compiles assessments based on learning standards and outcomes. More information on the Gradebook. Groups Groups are like a smaller version of your course and are used as a collaborative tool where students can work together on group projects and assignments. They enable you to separate students into smaller course units. Groups can be created for students or by students to enable efficient collaboration. More information on Groups. Help The Help feature is part of Global Navigation and helps users get help in Canvas at any time. It is available on every page on Canvas as the final icon in the Global Navigation menu. Click it to learn more. Instance Each school has their own instance of Canvas that is separate to other schools who also use Canvas. Think of it as each school having its own principal, teachers and support staff. They operate independently, but are overseen by the same governing body. Though each Canvas instance operates independently of others, all instances are run by Instructure. Within your instance are three environments, called test, beta and production. Your Canvas administrators will often use the test and beta environments to test new features and management techniques before they are released to the production environment, which is what all users use day to day. Modules Modules allow you to organize your content to help control the flow of your course. Modules are used to organize course content by weeks, units, or a different organizational structure that works for your course. With modules, you are essentially creating a one-directional linear flow of what you would like your students to do. Each module can contain files, discussions, assignments, quizzes, and other learning materials that you would like to use. You can easily add items to your module that you have already created in the course or create new content shells within the modules. Course content can be added to multiple modules or iterated several times throughout an individual module. Modules can be easily organized using the drag and drop feature. Elements within the modules can also be reorganized by dragging and dropping. Learn more about Modules. Notifications Notifications allow users to determine where and when they will be notified about activity in Canvas. Each Canvas user can adjust the Notification Preferences in their Profile to content them via email or SMS on a schedule that fits their individual needs. Some users will want to be notified of course events on a more regular basis than others. Notifications are set for an entire user's account, not on an individual course basis. More information on Notifications. Outcomes Outcomes are statements that describe skills, understandings, and attitudes that learners will develop during a course or program. Instructors can specify learning outcomes for their courses and track student progress based on measured standards rather than letter grades. More information on Outcomes. Pages Pages are where you can put content and educational resources that are part of your course but don’t necessarily belong in an assignment, or that you want to refer to in multiple assignments. This is a place where you can include text, video, and links to your files. You can even make links to other pages. Pages can also be used as a collaboration tool where you can create class wikis and set specific user access for each page. Canvas keeps the entire history of the page so you can see how it changes over time. More information about Pages. People People displays all users enrolled in a course, along with lots of information about their activities in Canvas. Instructors can click a student's name to view a summary of their activity in a course. More information about People. Quizzes Quizzes in Canvas are assignments that can be used to challenge student understanding and assess comprehension of course material. The quiz tool is used to create and administer online quizzes and surveys. You can also use quizzes to conduct and moderate exams and assessments, both graded and ungraded. More information on Quizzes. Rich Content Editor The Rich Content Editor is a word processor that you use to create and format content within Canvas. You use it almost everywhere to create your pages and other course objects. More information on the Rich Content Editor. SpeedGrader SpeedGrader is a grading tool that helps instructors evaluate student work. SpeedGrader allows you to view and grade student assignment submissions in one place using a simple point scale or complex rubric. You can use rubrics for fast assessment and leave text, video, and audio comments for their students. SpeedGrader is also available as a Canvas mobile app on iOS and Android devices. More information on SpeedGrader. Student View Student View allows you to see the course as a student views it and create a Test Student for your course. You can use Student View to see how your students view assignments, discussions, quizzes, and other areas of Canvas. More information on the Student View. Syllabus The Syllabus in Canvas makes it easy to communicate to your students exactly what will be required of them throughout the course in chronological order. You can also set the syllabus as your course home page. More information on the Syllabus.
