We're having a problem with Canvas Inbox/Canvas Messages, whatever it's called. Our kids are using it essentially as a replacement for texting, which in itself isn't a major problem--whether it's passing notes, texting, emailing, writing on a Google Doc, we know they're sending messages. The problem is that within Canvs, as an admin, we can't go in and see messages if kids have deleted them without sending a request to Canvas to get those, which might take a couple hours or a couple weeks. The vast majority of the time, we don't need them or one of the kids still has the messages, but occasionally there is inappropriate behavior that we have to investigate, but as far as I can find within Canvas, there's not much I can do. How do you all handle this? Ideally, we'd have at least one of the following options, but I can't see any indication that we have any of these:
Ability to restrict student-to-student messages (right now, they can send to anyone they have a class with)
Admin Access to trash/deleted messages
Remove the ability to delete messages
Automatic blind copy all messages to a certain account (obviously, this would be the last choice, but it'd make messages available if need be).

1. We need partial credit options for all applicable questions. It is unreasonable for teachers to have to go in and regrade every matching, multiple answer, and other types of questions that would have partial credit available. This is my teachers' number one problem with New Quizzes and why so many resist it.
2. The RCE needs to be on par with the RCE in Classic Quizzes. We need the ability to put math and science formulas and equations in without teachers having to do a lot of extra work. We need images to show up year after year instead of being housed only in that course for that year. We also need the media recorder. This is crucial for our special education students and their accommodations (not having to leave the room and being able to work at your own pace and hear your own teacher read it makes such a difference!), and it's also something our primary teachers rely on for students who are just emerging readers. To ask them to go to another program, record each question, save it, and then upload it is an unreasonable ask.
3. Grading needs to be substantially improved. Not only is it not convenient to get to the SpeedGrader for New Quizzes, teachers don't get alerts that essay questions still need graded. That needs to be on their to-do list like it is in Classic Quizzes. It also shows the current grade in the gradebook and then sends it over to our SIS when a sync is done, even if the teacher isn't done grading it, whereas with Classic Quizzes (and Discussions and Assignments), it shows an icon in the gradebook to indicate it's been turned in but hasn't been graded, giving a signal to both student and teacher that it needs graded. This current system creates added confusion and makes what had been a simple, stream-lined process far more complicated and frustrating than it had been--it's not easy to sell teachers on that when Classic Quizzes works so well for nearly all of their needs.

I completely agree. There are enough other software programs, including the original quizzes, that have this feature. I know each program works differently, but I also know enough about programming to know that you can take from one program and adapt it to another--it still takes time, but more like a few weeks and not a few years; this just clearly hasn't been a priority for Canvas. I'd like to see the company spend more time prioritizing the needs of their current customers using their current products and less time purchasing new products, or they run the risk of losing us. Lisa, multiple choice questions only allow for one option to be selected. It's the multiple answer questions that they can choose more than one. On the original quizzes, it does subtract when students choose an incorrect answer (so if they had to choose two and got one correct and one wrong, they got a 0); that set up poses a problem, though, when you want to award students partial credit and they did follow directions and chose the correct number, just not the correct answers. Assuming, at the rate Canvas is making changes and fixes to New Quizzes, we'll be lucky to even get one fix rather than multiple options for how we want such a question to be graded, I think a better solution is Canvas to limit the responses based on how many correct answers there are--that way kids can't choose every answer.

I agree. The way they've handled this is incredibly frustrating. Every time I've complained/asked for a timeline, etc., they tell me this is something they hear about all the time, but yet nothing seems to get done, and they don't communicate anything. When I complained on their fall survey about it and they then emailed me in response, their suggestion to me was to just come here and vote for this idea, which was frustrating, as I had the first comment on here, so clearly I'm aware of this idea, and despite all this time, they still haven't fixed the issue or communicated about it. This is a great tool but the functionality of using it/grading, especially after all this time, is going to make it incredibly difficult to persuade teachers to use it once/if we get partial credit.

I was told by Priority Services in October that this feature would be available in approximately 4 months. When I checked in with them this week for a status update, I was told it'd be on next month's update. I don't know if that means they announce it next month, though, or if it'll actually be working next month.

I agree. I'm frustrated that so many months in, they still haven't included this feature, and this isn't even a new feature; they had it in the original. This is causing significant frustration with my staff, and for the most part, they're refusing to use Quizzes.Next because of this one issue, and I don't blame them.

We need this for matching, as well as multiple answer, categorization, and ordering. It kind of defeats the purpose of having self-graded questions if teachers have to go back through and check each one to adjust points--many teachers just won't use them because it's a major nuisance. These are great question types, but in the classroom (and even on standardized tests), students can earn partial credit. I'd like to see Canvas grading more reflect how most teachers grade assignments.

When some of my teachers saw that there was no SpeedGrader link and what a pain it was to go through a large number of assignments in Moderate, they declared it was stupid and weren't going to use Quizzes.Next. Now that I can show them how to use SpeedGrader with the new quizzes, I think I'll get some back, but this is a ridiculously complicated way to get to one of Canvas's best features [for teachers]. It just doesn't make sense to make SpeedGrader so difficult to get to.

I was just talking to our Nearpod rep the other day, and he mentioned that they were making some changes where we'll be able to set the expiration date; however, I'm not sure if that will be true for teacher led sessions in Canvas or just student-paced. Check with your Nearpod rep, and s/he'll be able to help you, as they know that's an issue.
