We are looking at suspending a user. In the absence of an automatic setting, I will disable all notifications in the user's account first. I appreciate this discussion to help guide us.

One of our teachers found a workaround for this: Prepend each assignment with a number/decimal, e.g. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc. that is larger for later due dates. Then "Arrange" by alphabet A-Z or Z-A. The numbering system is honored in the arranging, thus mimicking arranging by due date.

I am shocked that this topic has been out there for over 5 years! This is a struggle at our school. At the start of the school year, students can see published assignments imported from another course and get nervous, all because the instructor forgot to unpublish each or wasn't able to put in the time to individually unpublish each assignment, or the fact that they were published wasn't visible (e.g. collapsed module view).

Due to the sensitivity of pronouns in some students' households, it would be ideal for a student to be able to indicate if the pronouns selected should show/hide to observers. Our approach is to honor the student's request for pronouns (and preferred name) within our school community, but some students experience adverse reactions at home.

We have employed the same approach for non-legal name changes/preferred names but with one modification: we put the preferred name in parenthesis in the full name field, e.g. Emily (Ezra) Smith. This way, it shows everywhere in Canvas, not just discussions, comments, and messages. This way, the legal first name, Emily, is preserved in Canvas to visually tie back to our SIS (PowerSchool), while the convention at the school is if you see a name in ( ), that is what the student prefers to be called.

Agree!! I left a comment on another thread but I would propose a carat in the upper corner of the gradebook cell that in the teacher's view, indicates that they have already left a comment for that student/assignment. The student view already has an icon that notifies them that the teacher has left a comment.

I get this same question from our teachers. Their workarounds include accepting email submissions, or putting the submission in a comment in the assignment. We'd like to see multiple submission types when external tool is used.

I have this same issue with our teachers. We want to be able to see longitudinally how a student is doing over time in the Gradebook. We also want to keep the most recent assignments to the left to make it easy to see who has submitted the most recent work. Ordering the assignments by due date is one way to do this. We also use block scheduling so have multiple sections of the same course, meeting on different days, thus necessitating different due dates. This would be a very useful enhancement.
